For legitimate national security -> 99% "good" For protecting domestic industry -> depends For protecting new innovation -> probably "good," but can backfire Blanket approach across the board -> 99% "bad" ... "Me no thinky" -> When someone's posts are mostly about their biased perception of what the other side is, instead of engaging with the topic - what are the tariffs, how are they impacting things, and is it "good," "bad"... To be clear, you seem to care more about your perception of the left than engaging with the actual topic. You seem to take positions based on your perception of the left, rather than your own values. It’s as if your values are primarily whatever is the opposite of your perception of the left.
Every country in the world has tariffs. Including the United States before Trump. Maybe the United States has been getting bad trades deal? Maybe there is merit to the claim. I'm not sure either way. I don't pretend to be an expert on it and even amongst experts there are probably disagreements. Plenty of people are very happy to say, "Orange man did it so I am against it" no matter what though.
On China, right? Right. https://www.commerce.gov/news/fact-...den-takes-action-protect-american-workers-and
Remember the core aspect of the tariffs that went into place by Biden is we gave out incentives for corporations to onshore those exact products in america. The subsidies provided by the IRA and CHIPS act paid corporations to bring manufacturing back to the usa without the US taxpayers paying for it through higher prices. We saw record manufacturing on items we had tariffs on. Batteries, solar panels, EVs, and critical minerals were all subsidized which allowed them to come back
Let's just focus on Mexico and Canada (we can do Europe later when he imposes blanket tariffs on them). NAFTA 2 (USMCA) set clear rules for trade and limited arbitrary tariffs between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Trump negotiated that deal and called it a huge win for American workers and manufacturers. If that were true, why is he now blatantly ignoring it? His reasoning isn’t about “bad trade deals” like he used to claim. Instead, for Canada, it’s because he wants them to be the 51st state, and for Mexico, he’s blaming drugs and illegal immigration - neither of which has anything to do with trade fairness. These blanket tariffs hurt the U.S. He loves to say tariffs are “beautiful” and will make America “very wealthy,” but in reality, they raise costs for businesses and consumers. Companies either eat the cost (hurting profits and jobs) or pass it on to consumers (raising prices). And Canada and Mexico will retaliate, hitting American exports. So instead of making America “very wealthy,” all this does is make everything more expensive (while giving corrupt politicians more leverage to play favorites with exemptions.)
Going back to the posts about Portugal pulling out of contracts with US weapons manufacturers, here's Denmark: How much of our economy is based on foreign sales of weapons? Can North Korea and Russia make up the difference?
war profiteering is pure evil. That said, as much as I hate war, I understand the importance in maintaining dominance, with balance. I find it so sad the first thing you think about is the economic advantage/disadvantage from selling weapons of war. A key aspect of control (for US, Russia and China) has been providing arms to countries. If they are hooked on your supply, they are bound to that supplier. Its why we used to see cheap Russian weapons across the third world for decades. Ukraine should divide up the occupied land between Russia and the US companies while allowing Ukrainian forces to build defensive structure using Russian weapons. But that is not what the war profiteers from the west want - they want full control, no compromise.
Its sincerely amazing watching MAGA cult destroy the us defense industry by accident cuz they worship a moron
Tariffs also hurt the companies trying to sell goods into the United States because increased prices will see people purchasing less of those goods. They don’t simply hurt American consumers. Something your “analysis” completely left out. Perhaps that hurts the sellers more than the buyers and we can get concessions out of them? A potential positive totally biased people like you intentionally ignore.
Its sincerely hilarious how you MAGA think Trump is trying to get concessions for his dumbass tariffs. What concessions has he gotten so far from mexico ? Canada ? What the hell has he achieved by his dumbass tariffs other than destroying the economy? Its always hilarious how MAGA thinks trump is playing some 4d chess. The guy who claimed immigrants were eating cats and dogs is playing 4d chess. Canadians and Europeans are boycotting visiting America costing us billions of dollars but don't worry trump has some genius plan he isn't sharing with anyone.
This isn't light listening for the gym or work, but it explains how far Europe will need to get their **** together before they can do more than they're talking. That big EU spending plan is mostly hype like that Stargate announcement...
Well - probably true. My response to that would be that Russia gobbling up other nations that are democracies is bad for the USA, bad for peace in the West as well. I don't have an issue with the USA sending weapons to Ukraine. I would not support US boots on the ground - but sending weapons to Ukraine, especially if the US gets some benefits from mineral development doesn't bother me... especially when you consider what the USA has supported with Israel.
If you think 100 billion is a lot of money - you must really think those tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans amounting in the trillions of dollars is an incredible amount of money. The new budget would add 150 billion a year in military spending (odd for a supposedly peace loving President), and another 100 billion a year in increased spending per year for the Pentagon. Again odd for someone that supposedly wants to cut spending. The budget would call for an increase of like 3.5 trillion in the deficit over the next 6 years. So - yes, when the cries are over money to Ukraine, while Trump guts domestic government departments - but increases spending on the Pentagon and DOD substantially - and gives tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans--- anyone remotely objective can see it is a bunch of nonsense lip service.
There isn't a "team" and that mindset is part of why the Democrats let a corpse run again and why the Republicans excuse anything that MAGA does. I really wish there was more of an independent mindset. I do not trust many of the people around President Trump, but there are two compliments I will give him - he is willing to think outside the traditional box on issues and he isn't afraid to speak to the American people. The man is a toxic narcissist and is a grifter of the highest level - but he does understand human psychology at a limbic level and he isn't afraid to speak his mind.
Anything is possible and sometimes conventional wisdom doesn't hold true - so maybe? However, by that some train of thought, the end outcome is less choices for the consumer and less competition. We will all have to wait and see what happens - the success of this administration is going to hinge on the economy.
