Because he is not as good on defense and is coming off of a much worse season. McCormick was one of the worst players in MLB last season.
That's true. Chas's OPS in 2024 was .577 in 267 PA. Jake's OPS in each month July - end of season was worse than Chas's overall 2024 stats, covering more PA (271). His OPS+ in the second half was 49. He benefitted from a hot start in April / May and was terrible for the rest of the season, over a larger sample size than Chas had all season. Jake has more range than Chas, but he's also coming off an absolutely atrocious stretch of hitting. He may have been the worst hitter in MLB over the second half. I don't think either deserves a long leash this season.
non-May Chas: 50 H, 226 AB, 6 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 17 BB, 67 K, Dwar -0.6 Jake: 73 H, 376 AB, 17 2B, 10 HR, 26 BB, 101K, Dwar 1.0
And this was with Jake having a mini-hot streak which had plenty of people here “eating crow” for bad-mouthing him all those other years…. And yet, here we are again.
Meyers, we at least know what we're getting....and what we're probably not gonna get. If we're still regularly starting Meyers against RHP in August Dana Brown has probably failed. I dunno WTF happened to Chas, but he didn't hit lefties or righties last season. Hopefully Chas can prove last season was just a random aberration, but it shouldn't take too long to figure it out.
Meyers still serves a purpose on a winning team even with hitting like he did last year. Chas serves no purpose on a winning team if he hits like he did last year.
The nature of the 26 man roster means a team is limited on how many platoon starters it has. After 9 starters a Because CF is a defense first position. Meyers' defense is stellar. Chas' defense is very good. The difference in Meyers' glove vs Chas' glove in CF is greater than the difference between their bats. That makes Chas at risk of becoming expendable because corner outfielders are easy to find. That said, I hope SOMEONE earns the everyday RF job. I'm fine with it being Chas, Dezenzo, Smith, or even Leon - I just want someone to earn the everyday spot so they can platoon CF. I think a true Melton-Meyers platoon if they had an everyday RF who was good enough to take it (+750 OPS and likely 800+) would make this a great team.
Chas is a fine CF (Not as good as Meyers) but he has to hit to earn the everyday CF job. Both throw like girls.
there will always be the world series catch. McCormick plays his butt off in the outfield.. Poor arm? fine. But poor defender, only in comparing to meyers.
