Sengun is a non-defensive, "finesse" center who lacks touch at the rim, not a lob threat, has a very inconsistent jumper, and is a bad free throw shooter. How is that possible? Too many red flags.
His offensive falloff has been very alarming. At his age he should be making clear forward progress...not going backwards. He has had a very big defensive falloff as well. Him and Jalens falloff from the first 2 months has been the biggest cause of our defensive issues aside from injuries. You have to make a lot of compromises for Sengun. He's not an elite rim protector, or lob threat, or floor stretcher. He's still a very good player and our most impactful guy(mainly due to a lack of offensive options)...but he needs to be significantly better as a half court focal point if were gonna accept all of his shortcomings as a player.
LMAO!!! The blood pressure for all the Sengun haters just went critical, call the paramedics STAT! Sengun is a very stupid player. He has been trying to play through his injuries for a year now. Mehmet Okur - lower back. Omer Asik - lower back + Chron's disease. and now it's Alpi - lower back. I would very much like him to pull a Kawhi and sit the season out, because Ime has been trying to save the day by riding his starting 5 to death every game with no regard for players' health.
Is the forum mature enough to have a discussion on Alpi's regression? Hard core Sengunatics will go spastic at the thought, but are some of his defenders who have their head's screwed on ready to admit their concerns?
Some context is good when interpreting on-off numbers. If the team has a strong bench, then the starters on-off numbers can get lower. And vice versa, when the bench is really bad, the starters on-off can get inflated.
The problem is, is this a regression? Maybe it's semantic but I think it's important for the discussion. According to Webster, "Regress" means "movement backward to a previous and especially worse or more primitive state or condition." If he was bad, then good, then back to bad, it's regression. (e.g. Jalen's bad -> good -> bad on defense is a classic case of regression.) But was Sengun ever bad at making those shots? Or is this the first time he is this bad? If this was a true regression, then I agree that it's a concern. Maybe the good stretches in the past were a fluke. But if this is the first time he is this bad, then we either try to discuss the reason why he suddenly became this way, or assume that it's just an outlier fluctuation.
How is it possible that he has all these glaring deficiencies, and yet, every time he steps on the court good things happen for the team? We score way more points while he's on the court, and the team allows way less points (plays better defense) as well. He has the highest positive impact towards winning of any player on our team. Quite the conundrum.
Advanced metrics favored Sengun even before he was drafted. It is why he caught the attention of Eli Witus + Rockets Analytics Team.
The advanced metrics never deceive. Traditional stats, yes. What the haters see is a complete alternate reality. For example in last night's game: Only on one Bryant three and one Turner three was Sengun ball watching and didn't contest. Officially charged with giving up 26 points, They shot 10/ 23 FGs he defended. for 43% That's excellent. Turner would have had the same percentage if they didn't call the late basket an offensive foul. Jabari and Aquaman were even better. Every other player dressed up as a cone. They just want to blame their least fave player for personal reasons.
His FT% (76% for a long stretch) & assists were better than last year until recently. The other worse things are all the same thing ( lower fg% -> lower ts% and lower ppg ) just to make the list longer. This is clearly trying to magnify and exaggerate the negatives. What I hated here is the " " at the end. We know any subpar performance of Alpi makes Paulo happy. Don't pretend please.
