I believe he did that cameo for free as well. Uncredited. One of those rare instances a short cameo steals the show.

So many great roles. The Firm, Mississippi Burning, and Unforgiven stand out for me. I've never seen his Oscar winning roles

    RIP

I feel like I'm living in a time machine -- I would have guessed he was around 80 and retired about a decade ago (2004!). He was a larger than life icon that always seemed to maintain a private life -- what strange situation I hope they didn't have to suffer.

He won Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (and deserved it, although his screen time probably matched that of Clint Eastwood's lead role).

That he wasn't Oscar-nominated for The Royal Tenenbaums was criminal.

By chance I recorded The French Connection recently. THAT Oscar winning role I've never seen and so have a chance of saying good-bye properly.

    Dude was a badass actor.

The thing about Hackman was you could believe every character he played, and those characters were SO different. This is so sad and the story is so weird...................RIP Popeye Doyle

    RIP,

    my favorite Gene Hackman movie has been "The French Connection";
his portrayal of NYC detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle won him his first Oscar

It sucks that Gene Hack Man, Wife, and Dog had to go out this way. HoOsIeRs is one of my faves...along with CrImSoN TiDdIes, UnFoRgIvAbLE, ThE pAcKaGiNg, and EvErYtHiNg ElSe.

QuEsTion...if she killed herself, then why didn't she let the dog out of the crate first?

An excellent article about Gene Hackman's life in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife, much of it after he retired from acting.

Pilates, painting and bike rides: Gene Hackman's life in Santa Fe
    Samantha Granville
    BBC News
Reporting from Santa Fe, New Mexico

Gene Hackman was a normal person in Santa Fe. And he really loved that.

Residents in the New Mexico city say they were excited to welcome such a massive celebrity to the community when he and his wife Betsy Arakawa arrived more than 20 years ago, but they treated him like anyone else.

"He wasn't famous here" was the phrase I heard when asking residents about why the movie star chose to call New Mexico's capital home. They describe a down-to-earth, chatty man who supported local businesses and enjoyed its flourishing arts scene.

Everyone here has a story to tell about Hackman, who was found dead alongside his wife and their dog at their home in the quiet desert city earlier this week.

'You didn't realize that you were talking to a celebrity'

Hackman was a lover of the arts and a painter himself, so he fit in well: Santa Fe is known for its iconic adobe architecture and is home to more than 250 galleries. Everything in Santa Fe is colorful, from the woven tapestry hanging on shop walls to the clothes people wear and even their personalities. There are murals in almost every alley and metal street art lining the roads.

Hackman immediately got involved with local art museums, most notably sitting on the board of directors at the Georgia O'Keeffe museum, while Arakawa had a luxury home-goods store, and collaborated with artists on various projects.

Hackman's paintings are displayed prominently at local restaurants, and there are a few lucky residents who have them hanging in their home. One of those people is Stuart Ashman, the executive director of the Artes de Cuba gallery.

That's pretty cool how he was so involved in the local community life and got treated ordinary. It almost sounds like a Hallmark film.

One of his first gigs in Hollywood was a short film for Civil Defense for nuclear preparedness.

Definitely a strange twist to the story. Hopefully it wasn't anything crazy.
