You really have to be in Houston to understand the frenzy of this story. When the crime happened, then the County jail accidentally let him go, now he has $15mm in total bonds because some judge is trying 6make a name for himself.

This guy looks like he definitely couldn't afford the normal bond amount

didn't really look into the original story but I'll take a look this afternoon. Campus crime is a weird topic, for many reasons. One-off incidents, the mixing in of things like consensual-sex-turned-rape-allegations, theft from unlocked dorm rooms and out-in-the-open library spaces, off-campus assaults that sometimes aren't included, etc etc. I think the main thing people are mostly interested in with these stories is violent crime, and sometimes that's surprisingly tough to filter for. Plus these statistics are self-reported by the colleges and universities, so that can also introduce significant bias into the data.

on edit: I'll add that at our institution, there are probably a dozen employees whose responsibilities include Cleary Act reporting/compliance as part of their jobs. When folks want to know why NIH indirect costs are so high, that kind of federal compliance is part of the unfunded mandate that has to get paid for somehow. So the federal government via NIH, NSF, and other granting agencies end up paying for it in the end as a cost of doing research.

It's unfortunate for everyone when these things happen. A student getting assaulted is gonna be a headliner

UofH is as safe a place as any university it seems. Its academic status has been in Houston headlines fortunately not too long before this. It gained a higher rating of some academic status recently. I'm trying to Google but not having any luck

That was the last crime not all the other crimes that happened. That was the worst crime but those other kids are protesting the overall security.

A group of students marched to the Ezekiel Cullen building on Wednesday afternoon with chants demanding the university’s board of regents invest in student safety after a sex assault and multiple robberies in the past week.

Last week, the university reported that a student was sexually assaulted and two other students were robbed near the Welcome Center garage on campus.

Mina Vuong, a university senior who helped organize the protest, said that students can’t rely on the university to keep them safe.

Despite receiving millions from our tuition and student fees, UH PD has failed time and time again to protect students on campus and we saw that again last night after someone was robbed at gunpoint,” Vuong said on Wednesday. “How much does our cost of living have to keep increasing by before we realize that we can not rely on UHPD for security?”

    Breh

UofH doesn't have abnormal crime. I'm down with more police but crime isn't a UpfH issue

Statistics prove that. It has the second lowest crime level of top six state.schools behind UT the second wealthiest school in the nation

Yes the students are frazzled by the fact remains it's relatively safe compared to other large state schools

Your YouTube videos don't disprove facts.

The YouTube videos are from Houston’s channel 2, 11, 13 and 39, NBC, CBS, ABC
You know the last one is the WB

If this is normal, why kids so mad then??

Sexual assault on college campuses happens a lot unfortunately. The only reason this is a big news event is because the offender isn't a student

It's not like rapists are running rampant at UofH, we get your issue with defund police but from YOUR YouTube post, UofH has adequate police numbers

Because it was a not a student, they're upset but they don't have abnormal crime

Where is your proof that they do have abnormal crime

Not students mad, that's not proof

Statistics show they rank pretty well

All you have is mad students. Yes it was a tape. One rape isn't a crime wave

UofG has a low crime rate. I'm not changing my opinion. It's based on facts
