20 players shoot the 3 ball better. Jabari is not amazing at anything he does. He is basic as it gets. Long body that gets a nice game here n there, but usually doesn’t have it every night.
Basketball is played on two sides of the court. Jabari was 5th best rebounder at the PF position last year and is averaging more rebounds this year. He had a very poor start at 3 pt shooting to begin the year, but had maintained over 40% for about 20 games before he got hurt. He is 22 years old and his recent injury proved to anyone that knows basketball what a giant impact he has on this team's defense. He is a great fit next to both Sengun and Amen. You need great role players to be a great team. Jabari may never be a superstar but he is critical to our future success.
Agreed, I am still waiting on him to explode, Gigi Jackson who is 19 exploded on a deep Memphis team.
He averages 6.7 Rebs this year. That’s actually pretty horrible for a starting PF. 3 years in the league, I don’t care about age. Some players have it, some don’t. I agree, role players are needed, but not for the price that Jabari’s agents may think. I’m not paying him off potential.
Smith is certainly not “critical” to our future sucess. Get real….he can help with it but “critical” belongs to Sengun and Amen. He’s an average 11 ppg PF in the NBA.
If Smith makes anything more than 20 million a year it is highway robbery. But again, we have a lawyer GM who knows zippo about basketball so we will probably get fleeced.
It’s gotta be somewhere around what Jalen got. Maybe a little bit less. I wonder what happens with Tari. He might be the first to go to restricted FA.
I'm sure if Jabari was on another team, people here would make lots of trade proposals to get him. Fans have unrealistic expectations for their own players. And when they don't meet those expectations, they think they are scrubs and want to get rid of them. But guys on other teams are always better.
Oh dude they stopped calculating rebounds that way because they discovered that it's more about what % of the total rebounds you're actually pulling down. So for example, if you're grabbing 10 out of 100 potential rebounds, you're grabbing 10% of the rebounds. Another player might grab 9 of 90 rebounds and that's also 10%. So these two are the same because player B will grab ten rebounds too if swapped. It's more complicated than what I'm explaining because for example your coach might ask you to be at the 3pt line on offense which kills your numbers because you're far from the action. Same player would grab more under a different system. So you also have to take into consideration if that guy has conflicting jobs. When non-shooting bigs start slowly taking 3's, their rebounds almost always decrease. So because of these things, we have to get to the bottom of these things and understand who's stats are padded and who's actually doing a great job in a bad rebounding situation. Some dude invented an easy way for us to calculate all of that not perfectly but way more perfectly than just total rebounds. By that metric, Jabari is the 5th most talented rebounder in the league at the PF position because despite us constantly asking him to guard mobile players (away from defensive rebounds) and space the floor (away from offensive rebounds) he is getting more rebounds than people who are put in that position. In fact, he's top 5 at getting more rebounds than people who have the same role. Does that make sense?
It's interesting because they watch other teams all extending their role player draft picks even if they are to be traded later. But they still act as though teams are dumping $20-25m role players because they're not stars lol. A guy worth $25m is worth two picks, why wouldn't we just wait a year to trade him? We're going to extend most of the 7 even if we want to trade them. It's the best way to get value even if you can't afford them long term.
I don't know how many 6'10" and up players are even taking 5 three pointers per game in today's league but it can't be many. Let alone hitting them at an average clip with the potential for more. It's a rare archetype. Add on Jabari's solid defense and rebounding and sure he might not be wowing anybody, but he's doing something very valuable to roster construction. Edit: Okay, I just counted, and I believe it's just seven guys: KD, Wemby, Lauri, MPJ, Myles turner, JJJ, and Brook Lopez. That's it. I believe nobody else 6'10" and above is even shooting that many 3Pers.
People are salivating over Naz Reid. He's shooting >5 attempts at >40% for the last 1.5 seasons. That's very good. He had a big leap on his 3pt shooting after his 4th season (age 24). Jabari is in his 3rd season (age 21). Jabari was a much better shooter than Reid in college. So it's reasonable to project a higher upside. Reid's defense and rebounding is not better than Jabari. And he's been coming off the bench playing around 25 mpg.
Yes, and Reid is only 6'9". He's barely tall enough to play center, it definitely limits his defensive value versus what Jabari could become. (I would still love to have Reid on this team though to be clear--having both him and Jabari would be great.)
That's stunning and if I were Jabari's agent this is essentially the pitch I'd start with. There are only 7 people who do this, he's the second youngest in that batch, he's a better mid range scorer than 4 of them and he's a better defender than at least 3 of them. He's easily the most switchable defender. Imagine what Bari's shooting and physique will be like when he's Lauri's age after 3.5 more seasons. I didn't know it was this extreme, but this is exactly why I've been saying: if we didn't have Jabari, we'd be looking for Jabari and we'd want him to be this age, this height and if you had to choose only 2 skills they would be shooting and defense. We need a Klay Thompson with a 7'1 wingspan. Plenty of time to do gradual work on his shooting, I don't understand why people panic about that.
Thanks for sharing, very interesting and it passes the eye test when you watch Jabari play. He's a tough defensive rebounder and something we've missed in the lineup with him out.
I remember when ppl here thought Jabari was trade bait right after injury. Jabari is a HUGE key to our success
