The point is invalid when it relies on inaccurate information.

The article you didn’t read states: "Publicly available records showed that in 2023 and 2024, the USAID paid a total of $44,000 — not $8 million — to Politico, and the payments were earmarked for institutional subscriptions to E&E News, a Politico publication. No other transactions between USAID and Politico were listed for the entire previous decade."

This highlight a backward and lack of understanding. Funding are public records. There are also IGs and oversight to investigate fraud, abuse and so on. Both of these - transparency and IG are now gone. Whatever the unelected billionaire said on X is just swallow up as good stuff. When in fact, we won't know what the hell these guys are doing without transparency, oversight and IGs.

With that, your point about how difficult it is to know the "actual number" (and destinations) is now more valid than ever. With USAID essentially shut down, where are the billions appropriated to it now going?

go back to the article I linked to, plus the excerpt I actually quoted. It includes your figure of $44,000 . . . IN THE EXCERPT I QUOTED (second paragraph):

You seriously think this is a good idea? Now I understand why you ordinarily attempt to refrain from posting an actual opinion in D&D. You should stick to what you know best. USAID clearly isn't one of them.

Slash, then steal - and you wouldn't even know.

Where is the money that was appropriated to USAID and other institutions going? Zero transparency, no IG, no oversight. Let’s just trust unelected billionaires.

    Unchecked power always corrupt.

Vought, King said, is “one of the ringleaders of the assault on our Constitution. He believes in a presidency of virtually unlimited powers.” He “espouses the discredited and illegal theory that the president has the power to selectively impound funds appropriated by Congress, thereby rendering the famous power of the purse a nullity.” King said he was “really worried about…the structural implications for our freedom and government of what's happening here…. Project 2025 is nothing less than a blueprint for the shredding of the Constitution and the transition of our country to authoritarian rule. He's the last person who should be put in the job at the heart of the operation of our government.”

Cute, the guy who supported a literally braindead President the last 4 years is throwing around "braindead" insults. If only you had any idea how totally effing stupid that makes you look to the majority of this country. Your twisted beliefs may be the majority here in the D&D but the majority of the country is now fully awake and rest of this country is waking up fast.

You lol'd at my criticism of you posting this because it was false. I did read the quote and I didn't fully understand it because of its passive aggressive nature

Its funny it's just like your posting style, oh why are y'all criticizing this hit piece on Harris as being obviously false, Y'ALL still care about her?

I post these right wing hit pieces from the same sites because I'm just surfing the interwebs, I'm not a Republican

again you seem to be missing the point of the original piece, which I've already explained is my view of the significance of the article link I posted:

I think folks here are rather completely missing the point of the link I posted: the point is not so much about arriving at some final bottom line number, be it 8 million or 44,000, but rather about (a) the difficulty of arriving at that number, but more importantly, (b) the sheer awfulness of the reporting on this question, from the Washington Post to the Columbia Journalism Review to the New York Times. That's the REAL point.

anyway. back to your lives citizens.

here is where I posted my explanation of the significance of that article:

The people that need to read this article will not read this article. In fact, they will happily gloss over this post.

This is an Australian story about a refugee camp just inside the Thai border where people fleeing the conflict in Myanmar were being helped by USAID.

"The medical workers left without even taking the equipment and the patients had to return to their homes, including some who had to be carried out."

He said multiple patients who had been relying on oxygen support died.
    ----
"When they suddenly shut the hospital, there were pregnant women and patients with chronic diseases who were discharged," said the woman, who requested anonymity to speak.
    ---
The organisation's Indonesia Instagram page is a telling sign of the disruption.

After months of posts detailing the achievements of the USAID team in the country, including field visits to multiple provinces, training sessions and high-level meetings, the latest post is a notice cancelling recruitment of three contractor positions.

Among them, an infectious diseases adviser and a project management specialist for tuberculosis.
    ----
The spokesman, who requested anonymity citing the uncertainty and sensitivity of the issue, said: "we can't even get an answer if our HIV [and] tuberculosis services are covered by the recently issued waiver for essential medicines and medical services".

It's starting to dawn on farmers, who have been calling their Congressional offices. (Much of that grain is sitting in Houston.)

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas said a freeze on federal funding and change at the U.S. Agency for International Development left $340 million in lifesaving food grown in the United States sitting at domestic ports awaiting delivery to locations around the world where people were starving.
    ---
“Time is running out before this lifesaving aid perishes,” Moran said. “Food stability is essential to political stability, and our food aid programs help feed the hungry, bolster our national security and provide an important market for our farmers, especially when commodity prices are low.”
    ---
“Any food aid helps in that economic picture for farmers,” said Duvall of Greene County, Georgia. “It is important to realize that we support efficiencies. We want it done more efficiently and not be wasteful. But we also got to think about the stability of our world. When people get hungry, they get mean and mad and they get jealous of our country that has everything available to them because of our food system.”

Specific audits are done at the agency level, not through the payment system at Treasury.

Rationale: Required by laws passed by Congress. This isn't your personal checkbook. There are codes that take the money back to specific agencies who have authorizing legislation and/or Congressional funding. (I use the and/or because there are some programs Congress continually funds but are without a current authorization bill--this is not some secret, but a well kept list known to all Congressionals.)

By law, anyone receiving any federal benefit must have a SSN.

I wonder who was in the room when he asked the fraud question, and whether it was ever really asked. One issue with Musk is that nobody is going to tell him he is wrong about something and he can't accept the notion anyway.
