Anything is possible in this situation, but I just don’t think Alex would keep the Astros in the running if they improved their initial offer but not close enough to compete with a 200M offer in hand. If that was the case, he would be moving on. I don’t see the Tigers being at $200M for Bregman with their payroll constraints, a very bad TV deal after the Bally Sports bankruptcy, and Tarik Skubal needing an extension in the next two years. I could see Toronto doing it, but they got Santander across the finish line weeks ago, and if they sign Bregman for $200M, they aren’t likely ponying up for a Vlad Jr. extension. Their fans would much rather have Vlad Jr. extended at $400M than pay Bregman half of that. We already know the Red Sox and Cubs are offering four-year deals.
Agreed. Also, you don’t sign 34-year-old Christian Walker to a three-year contract to have a “reset” year.
Blue Jays: 6 years, money unknown Cubs: 4 years, $100M+ Astros: 6 years, $154M (but unknown improved offer) Tigers: ??? Red Sox: 4 years, money unknown Spoiler Yes, these are nobodies so grain of salt
You are GM and give Boras and Bregman a deadline. I have no doubt that Crane had approved that deadline when it was set so I have no reason to be concerned about my job.
Blue Jays: 10 cookies with peanut butter Cubs: 6 cookies with a few sprinkles Astros: 10 cookies with chocolate chips. Bumped it up to frosted with the 11th cookie as a possible option. Tigers: 10 of something. Looks like cookies but unsure what they're made of. Red Sox: 6 cookies plain
If making an offer of $X to Bregman was a good idea Monday, then it's still a good idea on Tuesday. If you're rejecting it out of spite, you're not doing what's best for the team and should be fired for that. Or at the very least, it's evidence you're not a good GM.
Offer $X may have been an OK idea on Monday, although I did not agree that it was. On Tuesday after hiring replacements for the corner infield positions it ceased to be OK. A good GM does not ignore positions of need in order to overpay for a player he has no use for.
Unless you have a severe gambling addiction, have your interpreter take the fall, and are forced to defer 98% of your contract due to said addiction
