The way forward with the h5n9 bird flu is to develop a vaccine and to inoculate the domestic flocks.

Project 2025 will not fund this, since ... reasons.

JFK Jr is going to block this if he can. He hates vaccines and adding "chemicals" to the food supply chain.

    Trump will blame China.

Trump voters will be playing a lot for chicken and eggs ... and like it.

Even if I disagree with someone a lot, I appreciate it if they have a sense of humour. Most leftists on the D&D have none. Kudos to you.

Can I sell a single egg on EBay? One egg for one bit coin?

I mean, the credit card bills are not going to pay for themselves.

None of which do much of anything. Do you really 4 years of high egg prices?

C.D.C. Posts, Then Deletes, Data on Bird Flu Spread Between Cats and People
    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/06/health/cdc-bird-flu-cats-people.html

The data, which appeared fleetingly online on Wednesday, confirmed transmission in two households. Scientists called on the agency to release the full report.

Experts said that the finding that cats might have passed the virus to people was not entirely unexpected. But they were alarmed that the finding had not yet been released to the public.

“If there is new evidence about H5N1 that is been held up for political purposes, that is just completely at odds with what government’s responsibility is, which is to protect the American people,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health.

It was important that the C.D.C. immediately publish the full data and the context in which they were collected for other scientists to review, she said.

We're pretty close to a very dangerous Avian flu pandemic in humans and the plan over at 1600 Pennsylvania is to ....let a Hitler-enthusiast billionaire unilaterally abolish the CDC despite no legal authority to do so.

    For ****'s sake people.

Why aren't chicken prices rising like eggs have?

    Edit: different birds different farms

In addition, meat chickens are usually slaughtered at at 6 to 8 weeks old. The broiler chicken farm has a very steady and predictable schedule of new chicks. So if an entire of flock of broiler (meat) chickens are culled, the farm will be back in full production in a few weeks.

Egg laying hens require much more initial time investment of 18 to 24 weeks to start laying. Then the hens are usually kept for a couple of years. So a culling of a entire flock egg laying hens has a much higher cost in both money and time.

I also think another consideration is that chicken meat can be kept frozen for months for both storage and shipping. So there is always large stockpile of frozen stock to draw from to absorb fluctuations in the supply chain. This keeps the prices steady.

Where do you think the "predictable schedule of new chicks" come from?

Don't worry, we won't be shutting down or producing vaccines this time. Natural immunity only.

Hopefully won't be too severe when it inevitably does happen.

If Avian flu in humans develop projectile vomiting as a symptom, I am blaming you for jinxing us .

In all seriousness, the broiler chicken flock is also just much bigger than egg layers. There are about 370 million egg layers in the US and more than 9 billion broilers were slaughtered in a year. 25 million broiler chickens are slaughtered every single day.

Honestly, I am also side eyeing egg producers on whether they're colluding and jacking up prices because they can. Avian flu is real and killing millions of birds, but if losing less than 1% of birds can cause a 200-300% in price increase is surprising to me. Is egg demand really that inelastic? It wouldn't be the first time if a producer that had minimal or no loss sells the eggs for massive profit because they can.

EDIT: I was wrong about number of birds being culled. I read that it was only a couple of million in Q4 2024. But the actual number seems to be 7M in Nov 2024, 18.25M in Dec 2024, and 23M in Jan 2025. The USDA data doesn't breakdown the split between broilers and layers, but those numbers do seem significant enough to affect egg supplies. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestoc...za/hpai-detections/commercial-backyard-flocks
