This has to be the worst take Nook has ever had on clutchfans. Trump hasnt accomplished a single thing policy wise in 5 years. What in the hell is going to suddenly transform him into FDR.
Tax Reform- Trump has done nothing other than the basic republican tax cut. Regan doesnt get remembered by historians cuz he lowered taxes. Trump lowering the corporate tax rate another 7 points doesnt make him special Trade- Trade deficits went up during Trumps term as president. He hasnt accomplished a single thing on the trade front other than talk. Expansion of presidential power- he'll be remembered a top 10 president cuz he abuses the executive power for personal gain? halting government spending so millions of people on medicaid can suffer will make him be remembered in a positive manner? Nothing Trump has done has helped the middle class or normie American. Presidents get remembered if they deliver on making peoples lives better. Nothing Trump does is focused on the middle class. Destroying unions and attacking labor doesnt make you special
Right - and when LBJ and Truman did what they did, it was very controversial and a lot of people strongly felt it was a mistake. It is with hindsight that the actions are judged the way they are - largely by people that were not even adults when these reforms took place. Right - and there is a reason that I did not vote for Donald Trump and I do not agree with his platform - but that does not mean that is how he will be remembered. I can look back to Obama and Syria, and his foreign policy and see how there are often unforeseen consequences that end up impacting the world. Meacham will not be making these decisions in 50 years - indeed almost no historian alive today will. How people are viewed and how effective or "good" or "bad" they are can change with time as well. We do not know how the world will look in 40-50 years. Maybe? Probably more likely true than not - and if I were a betting man, I would bet that this is the case. However I have lived long enough to see really strong opinions on leaders change over time. The fact that Trump has so much power and is so agenda ambitious means that he has the opportunity for an extreme outcome bad... or good.
I'm like asrtro123, I really don't understand your logic because you're a big trump critic, what do you think Trump is doing that could be viewed as positive in fifty years? I don't even think deporting illegal aliens will be viewed as positive. I don't think it will be viewed negatively but I think it will be inconsequential. I don't think it is the problem people view it as and him lambasting them as dangerous criminals regardless of justification will be frowned upon as racism as it is Trump is certainly doing what conservatives want in terms of dismantling the government so he is certainly a conservative hero.
Don't confuse me saying that he has an opportunity to be remembered as a top 10 President if a majority of things go well for him - with me approving of his policies or even his performance or morals. When you have someone with the power that Trump currently has -- and the ambition, there is a real possibility for extreme outcomes. As for what Trump has accomplished -- he has given conservatives a stranglehold on the Supreme Court for a generation. He has changed the rules for what is and isn't Presidential and what a President can and cannot do. He is in the midst of carving up civil service and civil servants that has existed for almost 100 years. He has expanded executive power the farthest it has been in generations and he isn't even in time of a war. You can say all of these things are terrible --- and I would agree with you on most points, but we don't know what the fall out will or will not be and that is going to go a long way in deciding how he will be remembered.
Love your posts Nook but were you like in a coma or something for the last 8 years?? Remember how many of these diehard MAGA’s 6 months into his first term “didn’t vote for him but…” I would bet my mortgage that Trumps second term will be regarded pretty clearly as a disaster.
I must not be explaining myself well - I am a huge critic of Trump and his corruption and expansion of power. I am not predicting that he will be a top 10 President. What I am saying is that it is very hard to know how historians will view the current - in 40-50 years. Couple that with Trump having so much power and attempting to change the status quo - and you have an opportunity to have an extreme outcome. As for policies, I don't agree with Trump on many of his policies --- but I have lived long enough to see that there are so many unforeseen things that happen, that really hindsight is 20/20.
Maybe --- we will see how it is remembered in 25-30 years from now. I am not betting on him being remembered fondly, but I also am not assuming that he is going to be remembered as a train wreck.
Nook what are you talking about. The great society was WIDLEY popular and had huge support. Medicare was one of the most popular things during the 1960! What in the world are you talking about?! LBJ was widely popular even at that time and his approval rating was nearly 70%! Trump was never popular even during his first term. He had negative popularity from the beginning. When he wasnt POTUS he was only poling in the 30% range. People in the future are going to think how we were so stupid to have nominated him twice. They wont be thinking how great of a president he was. Utterly delusional man He has no huge policy sucesss results. He wasnt able to bring back manufacturing. The job market was shitty under his watch. He poorly managed covid that led to half a million dead. What successes are you even talking about "mass deportations" are popular in theory until millions of farm workers stop showing up for work and grocery prices go through the roof which is where we're headed. The population is going to find out just how much they hate extreme right wing policies. Americans just want cheap ****
I’m very wary of any of his populist economic plans, promises, vibes or whatever he’s putting forward materializing into well being for the working class. Tax cuts, his single major accomplishment from his first term being an example. Immigration really feels like more of a social concern than economic, which gives me a dark feeling to it all, coming from this movement. I can see how it could positively affect the working class, I can support the enforcement of immigration laws and not having a massive undocumented population. But how that gets done, how millions are deported by such a sloppy and inhumane bunch, seems like a mountain of a task with a chance of disaster at every turn. Trade, same as the tax cuts, I’ll be genuinely surprised and elated when I see an economic move that truly benefits the working class and isn’t primarily a further transfer of money to the richest groups in this country.
Mitch McConnell is responsible for the supreme court. It was McConnell that held up a nomination and calculated a super majority on the court. None of that happened cuz of Trump. Historians 50 years from now will credit McConnell for not filling a vacancy during obama term. Thats the fact
Staffing levels at the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan National Airport were "not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic," according to a preliminary Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety report on the mid-air collision. According to a preliminary report seen by The New York Times, a single controller was responsible for both managing helicopters in the airport's vicinity and directing arriving and departing planes at the time of the crash. Such duties are typically handled by two separate controllers. As part of the hiring freeze implemented by Trump, no federal civilian position that was vacant at noon on January 20 would be filled, and no new positions would be created unless required by law or under the president's orders. Trump's order does not apply to military personnel or positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety. It is unclear whether the freeze prevents the FAA from hiring new air traffic controllers or if these roles fall under public safety professionals. In a January 22 statement, Democratic Washington Representative Rick Larsen, the ranking member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and Democratic Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Aviation, issued a joint statement condemning Trump for allegedly freezing the hiring of air traffic controllers and other safety-critical positions. The Democrats added that the hiring freeze violates the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which mandates hiring the maximum number of air traffic controllers.
Im confused. Do you think every job position at ATC is plane watching? Do you think theres only one role at the agency? Jesus man please stop embarrasing yourself. You just come off as a utter dumbass
Trump just promised massive tariffs on taiwan's semiconductors this week. That means your electronics and phones will be much more expensive in the near future. None of that helps the "working class." Nothing Trump does benefits the working class. This week he halted all labor investigations into workplace abuses. Hes gutting the NLRB to allow corporations dismantle unions. This whole "working class" appeal is such bullshit @Nook
Not really --- The Great Society was not really discussed much during the 1964 election. The Democrats did very well in 1964 in the elections and that is how Johnson was able to get the legislation passed. His popularity at the time did not have a lot to do with The Great Society. Indeed, in 1966 the Republicans did quite well picking up seats as a backlash to The Great Society and the War of Poverty. We remember it as this wildly popular and over due change --- but a lot of people did not feel that way at the time, and after a period of 40+ years of it being viewed as a positive, we are seeing strong push back again. Being popular isn't really a major factor to me when it comes to how President's will be remembered many decades from now. There have been popular Presidents that are remembered poorly and unpopular President's in the top 10. Things are not always remembered as they actually were --- COVID is an example. We do not know how history will view how Trump and Biden handled COVID.
Trump doesn't give a **** about the working class. However -- the reality is that he appeals to many blue-collar workers and voters. I would argue that some of that is that the Democrats are out of touch with blue collar workers, and some of that is the personality of Donald Trump.
You should be wary of populists in general - based on history, they usually do way more harm than good. I am not professing that Trump really gives a **** about the working class. Immigration is a wedge issue that Trump has used as a way to cobble together nontraditional groups of voters. It also is a convenient scapegoat for all of the problems. Historically populists have used immigrants as this type of pacifier. We don't even know how many people will or will not be deported - how successful they will be at deporting them -- and what the impact will be. While I think we have needed immigration reform for a long time, what Trump is attempting to do is very ambitious and could be dangerous. Trump cares about the wealthy and not the working class - but sometimes it is hard to tell what the actual economic impact will end up being, or it is complicated like NAFTA.
Know what gets people killed? Not having adequate staffing for air traffic controllers. I don't know if that is or isn't Trump's fault.... but I know that when there isn't proper staffing for dangerous situations, you end up with tragedies.
