In case anyone doesn't know, this is a tweet about the Dominican League Series. Yanier played for the Lions, who are in the finals.
I do not for once second believe Altuve the everyday outfielder is a real thing. However there are benefits if he is willing to play some outfield. There are clearly game scenarios where him in the outfield likely hurts us very little versus him being at 2B. Not to mention the clubhouse example it sets if the franchise player is willing to be flexible.
Just some context for the difference Bregman makes, right now Houston is projected as the 9th best team in the league (fangraphs), 5th best in the AL. If Houston were able to replace the pa currently projected for Singleton, Leon, Whitcomb, and Trammell with Bregman, there would be a net gain of 3 fwar (assuming the defensive penalty for whichever player was moved to LF was minimal). That would make the Astros the projected 4th best team in the league, 2nd in the AL. Right now, Houston has the 6th best projected position player fwar in the league, 3rd in the AL. Bregman would make them #1 in MLB in projected position player fwar. Yes, even above the Dodgers. Re-signing Bregman would be a big, big deal.
Certainly would be. We can find somewhere for him to play. Talent wins out no matter what. I really hope we can resign him or at least a competent OF to replace the pile of **** we have in the OF now.
Altuve at LF doesn’t really scare me given we play half our games at Minute Maid and Jake Meyers is likely covering CF. I think they’d probably split him and Yordan there with the other DHing. Altuve still has enough speed to have solid range out there.
How much risk does playing Yordan in LF add? What is the +/- of Altuve's play in LF? Is Yordan a better LF than Altuve? What are the chances of Altuve getting hurt in LF vs Yordan getting hurt? Would Yordan continue to outperform his DH numbers by 100+ OPS if he played in LF? How much happier is Yordan playing more LF? At some point all the little differences add up to it being a better idea to just make Yordan the primary LF, right?
Crane needs to look at what the Dodgers and Yankees are doing. If he wants to win and is serious, he needs to spend to resign Bergman
The Astros, and not much anybody else are financially in the same league as the very big spenders in MLB. They have to be smarter to compete.
We need to also upgrade our medical staff so Luis Garcia and Christian Javier pitch an inning this year.
