I don’t think so. Boras has no leverage when his client has been sitting in free agency more than two months. If Bregman had a better offer than the 6-year, 156-million offer the Astros made him, he would be signed.
Red Sox or the Tigers might be lowballing if they think the Astros and the 6y/156m offer was off the table. This pressures them to at least match if they really want him.
The Red Sox and Tigers have had more than two months to beat the Astros’ widely reported offer, and they haven’t. They don’t want to offer Bregman the $200 million he was hoping for, at a minimum. It’s far more likely that Altuve still wants Bregman back, and Bregman is realizing his market isn’t what he thought it would be.
Why would they need to beat the Astros offer when the Astros had already moved on to Walker and Parades at the beginning of the off-season? Dana Brown hinted the Astros were out of the running when he said negotiations stalled and Parades was their new 3rd baseman. Everyone was convinced the offer was off the table and we had moved on. Their was zero pressure for the Red Sox or the Tigers to beat any deal.
I didn’t say how much weight Altuve’s opinion should carry. But, the information from Chandler Rome about internal clubhouse pressure to get Bregman back is likely about Altuve’s desire to continue playing with him in Houston. That said, I think appeasing your franchise player to a degree does matter, and Bregman is still a good player that will help the Astros on the field.
They needed to indirectly beat the Astros’ offer because Scott Boras made it clear that the price for Bregman started at 200 million. If you don’t think he conveyed that to every interested team, I don’t know what to tell you. If 6 years, 156 million from the Astros didn’t sign Bregman early in free agency, interested teams knew it would take more. They clearly haven’t been willing to go higher.
Yep, he made that clear at the end of the season. Altuve really wants Bregman to play his entire career alongside him in Houston.
Agreed. I would have been fine with Bregman, Santander or Profar. The Astros can use another good player, and Bregman is a clubhouse leader.
I am having trouble picturing Altuve with a big OF glove. He also needs stats at 2nd so he can go down as the GOAT 2 bagger. Not serious. Ok, somewhat serious.
