Yeah I just love KCD so much, and I'm annoyed that it's now taking heat from both sides of the political spectrum, which I feel like is pretty unusual. Most of the time there's a consensus of either the right or the left hating a game for dumb reasons. Both sides don't usually give the same game crap.

100% agreed and, as a side note... I'm pretty sure we're quickly approaching the point where literally all actual games journalism on Earth is done by Jason Schreier, and every other outlet just quotes his material and does editorials based on it.

Anybody on Marvel Rivals? And want to hoop on console + ranked? I'm bronze though after the update (was Gold).

Yeah, in this specific case, I think it is due to Daniel Vávra. Even glancing at some of his recent social media, he's happy to share some fairly controversial stuff which would get him criticized by the left and followed by the right (vs just "regular" gamers). And that latter group will then get upset when he does seemingly support something like "TEH GAYZ" in a game I guess (not that I really understand having a problem with that personally, but maybe that has to do with my own ideological leanings).

Of course it is perfectly fine to have opinions and share those opinions on social media, but in doing so, yes you will likely attract a lot of attention to your product (good and bad). This will be attention that other games will not receive because their leaders might not be as vocal online.

I think it's just another iteration of people wanting to encapsulate their lives with politics they support and insulate it from politics they don't. That includes entertainment.

It kind of reminds me of the features that say "Latino owned business" on grocery products or "LGBTQ friendly" for a barbershop or something. Some people would just like to buy woke games made by woke people, or vice versa. I think it genuinely makes the product better, or worse, for some.

    Tell him, @Salvy

I hear Avowed will not require to play PoE1 or PoE2 to understand the story or the world. That being said, if you like CRPGs with isometric POVs, they are absolutely great games worth playing. Just don't expect Baldur's Gate 3, that's a nearly impossible bar to surpass.

Yeah. I feel like BG3 might have ruined a lot of other games, but that's good to know. I am sure I could enjoy the games.

I made a horrible mistake and researched the controversy. Ever since then algorithms have given me stupid recommendation after stupid recommendation. I guess pre-release there is some stupid rumors and turmoil.

Daniel from Warhorse has been somewhat conservative in posted views. He also is Jewish or has Jewish ancestry. There is a rumor which doesn't seem to be confirmed that KCD because there is a ban in Saudi Arabia. Speculation is that was a homosexual scene. A person who is a self professed Nazi started talking about blasting Daniel.

I've seen people people claim there is no DEI in the game and others saying it's woke and Warhorse has abandoned whatever it was that made these folks love them.

My take: Warhorse doesn't care about anything but making a historically plausible game. That caused some folks to hold them up as anti-woke heroes. Daniel's own social media posts led them to believe that was accurate.

Folks that focus on that stuff and not the game lost their minds and turned on Daniel for whatever was in the game. But anything in the game is not made for appeasing either political side.

The controversy was like a snowball into an avalanche. Once the game comes out, it will go away.

Other notes. One of the biggest fans of the game and who makes YouTube videos about it is a trans gamer. On some message board the company doing PR made a rule about not allowing homophonic or transphobic language and this inflamed people that hate that stuff more than they like playing good games.

I wish I had never researched. Just because of the suggestions for videos I keep getting.

So I really want to like Helldivers, but I played with some coworkers and they are much higher level than me. They were killing everything or completing whatever task before I could figure out what to do. Later I tried playing solo and that was way too hard.

Went back to Battlefield 2042 and enjoying that even though I'm not good at it.

Unicorn Overlord has been a great game. Highly recommend for jrpg fans. You think you mastered a matchup, but there's just enough changes in the stage for you to rethink and change everything. Or like you breeze through something like Coloseum, only to get flattened because your lineups weren't good enough.

Technically some of the matches could be considered repetitive, but in terms of The Grind you find from jrpgs, it's a blast.

I think my flaw was that I wanted all my lineups to be one turn killers, but playing right would mean a few support teams to heal or shoot from behind.

Also, there is a "new game+" mode where the stakes are raised with perma death. My teams rarely died in normal difficulty, but only being able to use 5 items instead of 10 would make me play differently. That challenge is for someone with a lot more time and sleep to burn.

I dug this thread up because of this, and what a big eyeroll for whoever caused the stink. I'd say the tried and true B- story is worse than the localization

Who cares if the words were flowery? The localizers had a vision where the characters acted like watered down shakespearean characters, and some loser snobs decided they wanted to barf then tell anyone who cared about it rather than play a game. It's mainly the royals who talked like that while mostly everyone else had their own regional style. Ofc, they wouldn't know because they shat on a demo.

I was expecting All Ur Base levels of bad, but everyone has to plaster a dumb hot take to feel self important and relevant these days.

I'm not as tapped into games as I used to be, so why is the industry is influenced by this guy for whatever reason?

Let me know if you want to give Helldivers 2 another go. I have a couple friends I played with pretty regularly for awhile but haven't dipped back into it for a bit, and might be fun to do so.

He just kinda seems like the only one who wants to actually spend time investigating stories. Everyone else covering games is doing low-effort reactions, editorials, top-10 lists, etc. Because hey, that stuff generates a lot more clicks per hours of effort.

I wish we had 50 more Jason Schreiers, but I guess I gotta settle for 1.

Yeah, Schreier ends up doing a lot of these big industry pieces and investigations, and so for that, he's earned a lot of respect in the game industry with his solid work. I'd argue there have been a few that have done similar work (albeit maybe on a smaller scale), though I think one problem is that the industry in general just...doesn't want this kind of journalism. Schreier used to work for Kotaku, and due to issues with what went on there, he bailed. Luckily for us and him, he got his gig at Bloomberg, and that has allowed him to continue his good work. Stephen Totilo also worked at Kotaku around that time, and while I prefer Schreier, I think Totilo also did a pretty good job with his journalism. Totilo left Kotaku and I think got a gig at Axios, but ultimately ended up having to go independent with his work. And...good luck with that. Patrick Klepek is another name that seemed to follow a similar path IIRC. I'm sure there are (many) others.

I think there are folks who would love to do that type of work, but the various outlets and forces involved don't seem interested in investing in this kind of journalism (and you do need investment if you want the type of quality Schreier provides). Honestly this is probably a widespread issue with journalism that isn't isolated to the video game industry. It is all about getting clicks. Who cares what experts say and what lies might be uncovered by investigations?

PS5 (but competitive mode is open to any console or PC but not both at the same time). By "hoop" I mean "BALL".

Some Early access games I checked out (some are closer to full release than others).

    Played Cosmoteer:

Played about 20 hours, and I really like the core of the game. Similar to a lot of games of this type, but the...engineering/design work is unique-ish and pretty fun (and I suck at it). Maybe like putting Rimworld aspects into this kind of game is a good way to describe it? It needs more content and maybe some more polish/balancing. You can unlock the entire research tree within a few hours I think. Still in Early Access, so might improve in those aspects when it has its full release. There are also mods which *do* add a lot of that content I'd like, though they're not necessarily well balanced...because they're mods. Still a lot of fun though, and I'm looking forward to trying this again when it has its full release.

    Played Valheim more:

One of those survival, single/multi player games. I think I played like 45m shortly after it was put on Steam initially, but I didn't get around to it again until recently. I was hooked for the first few hours, though over time I decided I didn't really dig the actual gameplay loop. Probably a blast if you want something challenging and/or something you can play with friends though. I might put more hours into this later, but I think it isn't *quite* for me.

Recently started playing Enshrouded (~20 hours so far)

This takes mechanics from like 12 different games haha. Some Souls, some Zelda/Genshin Impact, some Valheim (or other games in that genre), maybe some Dark Cloud, etc. Coming off Valheim, this actually scratched the itch I got from Valheim while also providing other things I like in games (and was generally designed more towards my liking). I can't say anything specific is really *that* great (some mechanics are very rudimentary), but I do like all these systems coming together in a game. Feels like there's already enough content for 40-80 hours or so, maybe more.

Each game has multiplayer components, but I only did (offline) single player. No idea if the networking on these games is any good, but I'm guessing they're more fun with friends. Probably easier, especially the latter two, though I think both allow you to modify various game world parameters to make it easier (or harder) if you so wish. Each game despite being in Early Access also generally ran fine, no game breaking bugs, etc. For $20-$30 (with no Steam sale), I think they're all worth it.
