3rd year Sheppard will be better than 4th year Jalen over the course of the season. That was the bet. I'm not going to concern myself with much of what Reed does this year. I've seen all I needed to see from him. Jalen played with Amen last year as well...had a heater....and fell off the face of the earth again to finish out the season. It's what he does. This stretch doesn't exactly move the needle for me. If he keeps it up for the rest of the season....different story. I also don't take glory in Jalen playing bad. I'm thrilled when he plays well and annoyed when he plays bad. I've mostly been annoyed during his time here. Can't stand people that root against their own players just for vindication.
I figure if Reed is averaging 18-20 PPG as a starter and has 6/6 with 40%+ from 3 that's immediately better than anything Jalen has ever done.
I'm at the "starting to believe" point right now with JG. Not ready to eat a whole plate of crow for doubting him, but I'm almost there. I think if he can keep this heater he's on going up until the ASB, I'll have seen enough dating back to last year's ASB to say, "okay, over the last year of him playing basketball I've seen a major defensive improvement and a decent offensive improvement. He's on the right track." This brutal stretch we're about to face is going to be interesting, he'll be up against some very, very good teams. How is he going to respond? If he falls off a cliff and we go on a losing streak, I may be right back to doubting him again. If he continues to show up in a big way... maybe we really have something here. Anything in between, and jury's still out.
You could be a decent three point shooter and still have a poor scoring efficiency. Look at last season FVV. Almost approaching 40% from 3 with high high volume at 8 attempts a game and still below league average efficiency because his rim finishing numbers were horrendous. The thing about Green is defenses when he's feeling it from three, have to defend him at the 3 pt line AND dedicate help defenders hedging towards his potential driving lanes because they are that afraid of Green's rim attacking. This creates scenarios of ridiculously easy buckets for teammates as long as Green is competent at passing out of doubles because in those situations it usually results in hockey assists with a wide open corner three or wide open dunker spot attempt. I don't think Reed will ever possess that level of gravity because teams are simply not going to fear his rim attacking and not dedicate so many defenders hedging his driving lanes while also guarding him at the three point line. Being an elite shooter has its own type of gravity but it isn't the same level of gravity that a player has who is streaky from three but is seen by opposing defenses as lethal attacking the rim.
Jalen played the best all around game in his career against Memphis. That's pretty much his ceiling we envisioned when we drafted him. Whether it is sustainable remains to be seen. What's encouraging is that the frequency of bad games is going down. I think this is the first time since we got him when he is showing that it is possible for him to do it consistently.
Not sure why you can be annoyed with JG but I cant be annoyed with Sheppard and thats me rooting for him to fail. Sheppard has been garbage, way more than Green has ever been. Thats just fact as seen by his bad D, 41% TS and 28% from 3. And we are actually trying to win games this year unlike JG's past 2 yrs so having a bad player play 10 mpg and drag us down is just frustrating. You are mad at JG having heaters but Sheppard has done nothing but colders every game he played as a Rocket. A 6 ppg for him is like 30 pts for JG. His career game is 12 ppg lmao. JG falling off the face of the earth is still better than an average Reed Sheppard gamd. The fact that you can even be annoyed at JG and then go all out and defend Sheppard is what's sickening tbh. Why cant you be fair and put the same standard on both players? So JG cant have a bad game cuz that annoys you but Sheppard who has a bad game almost every game is fine and you've seen enough? LMAO give me a break man. I'd be happy if Sheppard even turns into Aaron Holiday cuz right now he is at Scoot Henderson/Anthony Benett level bad.
Sengun might have the reputation and some advanced stats to back up him being the better player. And I agree Green has to play at his January level for the rest of the season to be considered better. But, ts half way through the season and Green is scoring more than Sengun..... On better efficiency. Ya Jalen has a higher ts% than Sengun this season which is something people wouldn't believe at face value.
Exactly... Players don't simply go from trash and not good at basketball... To the best player on a team in the same season... Which is literally what Jalen is trending to be if he maintains close to what he's been doing the last 20 games.
Silly post... I fired up Jalen is an aggressive and confident one... And his issues have largely been mental focus... If he's doing the extra ****... It generally means it's cuz he's playing well.
Ceiling is 1)Jalen 2)Amen 3)Sengun Median is 1)Sengun 2)Amen 3)Jalen #1 option superstar perimeter scorer really does trump any other potential max ceilings.
Essentially Reed at something like 16.5/6/6 on 48%/40%/85% is better than 4th year Jalen who's had two hot streaks and up until recently....was on pace for his most inefficient year ever. I don't think Reed would have to do a whole lot to surpass Jalen. Just play his game. If Jalen can do this year that which he's never been able to do before....be consistent....then obviously it'd be hard for Reed to match that. Jalen at 25/6/4 or something is All-Star caliber so long as it's on good efficiency. Until Jalen can show any semblance of consistency I'm just going to go by what he has been always consistent at: being frustratingly inconsistent.
I guess when i say ceiling I’m thinking of a high end but at least somewhat realistic outcome. Maybe 90th percentile as opposed to the absolute 100th percentile, but even then i would probably take amen
Reed would have to do a whole lot to surpass Jalen. I think on principle people should make fun of your unhinged belief in Sheppard while shiting on Jalen for the past 3 years. It is a moral imperative to shame your logical inconsistency, your unhinged favoritism etc. Jalen Green is 8th all time in scoring average before turning 22. Reed Sheppard could be in the tankiest of tankiest teams and still not be close to that because as Ray Allen said "fans don't understand how hard it is to get a clean shot that isn't blocked off in the NBA". A guard struggling to find a shot attempt without the fear of blocking is not going to make all time top the scoring average lists.
