My point is that the most qualified person should be hired.

Completely regardless of race, skin colour, sexual orientation.

If that means it ends up 100 black Mormon lesbians in the 100 top jobs, that's great. (But I wouldn't check for that.)

It's just statistically unlikely that this would happen purely on merit, which is what should be happening.

So if it happens anyway, that makes it very probable that hiring and promotion did NOT happen purely based on merit.

They could be. The results and the fact that the Pacific Palisades reservoir was empty and that a fire hydrant check was called off and that other recommended precautions were not taken do not indicate that that is the case.

It was being repaired. Since the fires are expected to be year- round occurrences perhaps oh wise one you could tell them when it is the proper time to repair.

Also those reservoirs are not designed for fire fighting - that was never their intended purpose. It's debatable if it would have been a difference maker as it doesn't hold enough water - probably a modest increase in pressure from what I have read.

When is the most vulnerable moment? Normally these fires happen during the summer. Perhaps you and ATW should put your heads together and come up with the most optimal time.

 

I'm thinking that you're assuming heading up a major metropolitan fire department is this heroic, macho type job, but in reality it's probably more political than anything.

I think we need to wait for the dust to settle to determine what -- if anything -- could've been handled differently.

 

It's not okay at all. But it is okay to have additional sympathy to folks that lose everything and have fewer resources to rebuild and bounce back.

 

What about those who had a nice house but also a big mortgage and no insurance? You draw the line somewhere?
