I understand your previous point that Hummel is still on the roster for a reason, but for the life of me, I can not see him make this team. To me, even considering platoon staus, Leon is a much better candidate to give the opportunity to. What does worry me is that IF the Astros do not think any of the current projected opening day OFers can start in RF except Chas. By extension, that would take away Meyers' platoon partner and suddenly both are starting nearly every day vs RHP. If this team does not add a RF, then at least I hope they give Dezenzo or Leon a chance there.
LOL. Cubs be like- We traded for you for this year only, not to cater and resign you. We only want your FA year stats to propel us now as we're trashing our lineup soon anyhow.
RF has to be the biggest need for the Astros rn. Leon has multiple years of professional OF experience and may have one of the best arms in the system. Dezenzo likely also has a good arm, but has very limited OF experience in the minors. Leon is two years older than Dezenzo and is in his make-or-break year with the Astros, so he might get the nod over Dezenzo, who start the season as the AAA RF starter. I do think that the Astros add another significant bat this offseason, but most the rumored OF bats are LF only.
I would like to see Leon get the first chance, unless a veteran is brought in. It just feels like the Astros think his window is closed and he is just an after thought. I haven't heard anything about him. Didn't hear anything last year either, when he was having his 3rd consecutive good season with reduced K rates in AAA.
Really? You really think he was given a real chance? Plenty of big leaguers have slow starts to their career. Bregman? 0-32 in his first 8 games. All starts before given a day off. Tucker? 6-39 (.153 avg) in his first 14 games all consecutive before getting a day off. Loperfido started 6 of the first 7 games he was on the roster including the day he was brought up. Whitcomb sat his first day, then started 7 in a row and 11 of 13 games. Dezenzo started the day he was brought up, 5 in a row and 9 of the first 11 games he was on the roster. Leon was brought up Sat 3 games Started 3 games getting 10 PAs Sat 4 games Started 2 games getting 8 PAs Sat 4 games (1 PR appearance) Started 1 game getting 3 PAs. Was sent back down. He has had zero chance to show what kind if a big leaguer he may become.
I do not know if there is something the organization has against Leon that we do not know about. He deserves a real opportunity to play his way onto the team if no such enmity exists or to be traded if it does. I think he is best suited to a fourth outfielder role but I will be disappointed if he does not get a fair shot.
I agree I'm not saying he deserves anything but possibly a chance. If the Astros leave openings on the roster for rookie outfielders, he has the experience and tools to fill a roll. He may be Derek Fisher, or he may be Raul Mondesi. He's most likely something in between. But how will anyone know if he spends another year in Sugar Land.
