And the problem with Trump supporters is justifying stuff like this. Whether we believe it or not he shouldn't be saying stuff like military action is possible

He's not a kid on the playground arguing about pickup game. First you are all criticizing people who said how else would he acquire Greenland if it's not for sale, I can't believe you lefties would suggest he would invade Greenland.

Now he says it and you're still on his dick.

I already addressed it. This was more of a general response.

    You are really worked up.

You're conflating things and saying things I didn't say.

I'd be happy for the U.S. to purchase Greenland. I said I do not care if the people of Greenland want to be sold to the United States or not.

Countries have sold territories in the past without the popular approval of the people of that territory.

The Russians didn't ask the native population of Alaska if they wanted to become a part of the United States.

The Danish didn't ask the native population of the U.S. Virgin Islands if they wanted to become a part of the United States.

    Trump’s Bully Pulpit Diplomacy
A Greenland deal has potential if he’s artful. Panama would be a mess, and his Canada trolling could hurt the Conservatives.

Donald Trump has always enjoyed talking real estate, but these days instead of hotels or condos his acquisition targets are sovereign nations and territories. At a press conference Tuesday, the President-elect made news for remarks on adding Canada, Panama and Greenland to the U.S. property portfolio. The trick is figuring out when Mr. Trump is trolling and when he means it.

One journalist at Mar-a-Lago asked the President-elect if he is “considering military force to annex and acquire Canada.” Mr. Trump: “No. Economic force. Because Canada and the United States, that would really be something. You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like . . . ”

This is pure trolling. Mr. Trump likes to taunt Canada’s progressive Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, belittling him as “Governor” of a soon-to-be 51st state. Mr. Trump has a point that Canada doesn’t pull its weight in NATO, having recently pledged to hit the alliance’s spending target, 2% of GDP, by 2032. But Canadians don’t want to join the U.S., and the country’s political culture is that of a European welfare state. What would it do to Mr. Trump’s GOP majority to acquire another California?

Mr. Trudeau has presided over national decline, and the polls say that Pierre Poilievre and his Conservative Party are in good position for the coming election. Yet the more Mr. Trump tweaks Canada by calling it America’s next real-estate purchase, the more he’ll force Mr. Poilievre to push back as a nationalist to win. Mr. Trump seems never to notice the downside of making fun of allies.

On Panama, it’s a muddle. “The Panama Canal is vital to our country,” Mr. Trump said. “It’s being operated by China—China. And we gave the Panama Canal to Panama, we didn’t give it to China.” He argued that the U.S. handover of the canal, in a treaty that was ratified by the Senate in 1978, was “a big mistake” and “why Jimmy Carter lost the election.” Mr. Trump also said he wouldn’t commit not to using military force.

If he means that, he’s asking for trouble. It would turn an ally in the Western Hemisphere into an adversary. Does he want a forever guerrilla war?

More likely, Mr. Trump’s bluster is aimed at some deal on canal fees or maybe the Panamanian ports managed by a Hong Kong entity. But he’s simply making it up that Chinese soldiers are running the canal.

The bigger threat to the region is the Cuba-Venezuela axis, which has caused millions of refugees to flee, including into the U.S. How about working on that?

Greenland, however, is intriguing. “We need Greenland for national-security purposes,” Mr. Trump said. “People have been talking about it for a long time.” He’s right there.

Secretary of State William Seward thought about buying the island, around the time he negotiated the 1867 purchase of Alaska. Harry Truman’s Administration made an unsuccessful offer in 1946. The U.S. already has military forces in Greenland, and the old colonial power, Denmark, can’t defend it from Chinese or Russian designs.

Mr. Trump might be serious on this one. Yet flying in Trump Force One this week for Don Jr. to tour Greenland isn’t exactly diplomatic finesse. “We’re going to treat you well,” the President-elect told locals on a speakerphone. Then at Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump told the media he wouldn’t rule out military action. Such stuff is less likely to woo Greenlanders than to pique them, perhaps into wanting independence and an alliance with bad actors.

One possible option might be a defense free association compact with Greenland, similar to U.S. arrangements with Pacific island states. The subtle art of persuasion would be required. Mr. Trump often prefers to talk tough, but using the bully pulpit to bully America’s friends is no help against the real bad guys.

Appeared in the January 9, 2025, print edition as 'Trump’s Bully Pulpit Diplomacy'.

The value of Greenland is really only contingent on climate change being real. This push is 100% an admission from an open client denier that they are lying to us… and rubbing that lie in our faces like you are an idiot.

So are you guys as dumb as Trump thinks you are?

I don’t know why Danish officials “fear” Trump here. Why would any NATO European country be surprised as all that Trump might or might not try to wedge NATO apart and antagonize them? It was the most obvious outcome of Trump getting elected that he was going to try and get out of NATO by creating wedge issues.

Denmark needs to tell him to fck off and call his bluff that he won’t annex and invade their land. If Trump ordered military officials to fire on NATO troops there would be hell to pay for Trump. It would be incredibly stupid on his part and nothing would end his lame duck presidency faster except maybe firing on actual US citizens.

Yeah I'm in denmark now and that's the mood here. Folks are mad that the PM isn't drawing a harder line. Locals here would go to war. Europeans don't mess around with their sovereignty. He's already caused the damage

Countries like India and African countries are going realize teaming up with usa is a lose lose and start pivoting to China. I wouldn't be surprised if Europe does a hard pivot towards Chiha as well.

This is what happens when you have a low iq society in America. It's sad what's become of America.

clearly the word is out and Blinken doesn't want to go mano a mano with the Danish locals

So let's say The Donald decides it is time to take Greenland by force.

Does there need to be a vote in DC to support?
Would Americans ever let such a thing happen if not the want of the public?
Can a president just say lets go get Greenland and all have to fall in line from military leaders to representatives and constituents?

I know Trump speaks in bluster, but I'm just curious what it looks like if he decided to do such a thing.
Could it ever possibly happen just because he wants it to be so.

I will check back and see what y'all come up with.

plus since he's literally Hitler he's gonna need somewhere to put the camps where he will imprison his political opponents. Greenland is as good a place as any, far fewer environmental restrictions than the lower 48 so he can get the infrastructure up more quickly

-Legally yes the US president needs Congress to vote to go to war. Especially in the case of attacking a nation that has not attacked us first.
    -Does legality matter...

... It matters more for the military as it gives them the ability to disobey orders that are clearly illegal, and unconstitutional. If the military wanted, they could all collectively stand up to the president if they wanted to, and he could just fire his entire chain of command and hope that down the line eventually the generals on down buy into his order.

Where the legality doesn't matter anymore is in the fact that Congress really is no longer a threat to impeach Trump. Any other president yes... that's still a threat. With this one though, he doesn't care, and because he doesn't care it makes him more of a threat to be completely unaccountable.

Will there be riots in the streets or enough political discourse with Americans that sways Congress, and his cabinet to defy him, kick him out of office, or whatever else to get him out.... IMO probably not. I think Trump has successfully worn out this country politically, and there is little appetite for really caring too much.

We also have a ton of sh*tty people in this country who would love to counter protest. They love Trump's fascistic BS, and would love to go out and counter protest who they perceive as bigger enemies than ISIS, the cartels, or the Chinese or whoever. The fact is 30 to 40% of this country is completely brainwashed into believing liberals in America are the biggest threat to the world, their salvation, and their immediate families. These people are nuts, and any sort of mass protest will be met with a sh$t storm of counter protests in support of Trump's BS.

-What does it look like if Trump does the thing-

Greenland.. probably doesn't look like much of anything. Trump sends a battalion over there to small patch of land not covered in Ice. Denmark, NATO, and the UN all say that the United States does not own Greenland. Trump says he does. Nobody can like move there so it's basically just Trump lying that he owns Greenland when he doesn't.

Will Denmark, and NATO send troops to Greenland and fire on US troops that step foot in Kalaallit.. which is like the only town in Greenland....? Maybe but I doubt it. The fact that the US has no way to populate Greenland makes his claim pointless. It's not like Russia taking Ukraine where the goal is to as quick as possible flood the country with Russians like they did with Crimea.

Taking the Panama Canal by force though... that's a different story. There will be bullets and blood if he tries something there.

No way the Trump family is misrepresenting the truth. So unlike them to manipulate their followers. I guess when they buy your crappy shoes and watches for a quick buck they are easy targets

He is literally someone who says "migrants poison the blood of our country".

Take that for what its worth. I personally wouldn't risk someone saying Hitlerian rhetoric so comfortably in a position to manage the world's largest bureaucracy and world's most powerful military.

But ya, I guess our predictions of Hitler are wrong if a new holocaust doesn't occur. You might just be able to do victory laps in a few years after a few million migrants have their lives ruined but it won't be a holocaust and Trump wouldn't literally be Hitler and you would be right.

If he literally isn't Hitler, would that make his second term successful?
