Another injury signals our destiny: is it realistic to bench Amen ever again?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by Mathloom, Jan 7, 2025.

?

Who sits if Brooks/Amen are playing well when Jabari returns?

  1. 38%-shooting Brooks

  2. Budding Star Amen

  3. 6'11 Jabari who was hitting 40% of his 3's and playing really good defense

He's not going to score on high volume right now but that is just a part of half of the game.

The game is offense and defense in almost exactly equal amounts. Youv'e seen with your very own eyes defensive players having superstar impact even though they can't make shots (Ben Wallace). You've seen players make superstar impact even though they can't play a lick of defense (Iverson). There is a threshold at which the rule breaks. It's ultra-rare and each generation's outliers are specific to the rules of their era.

    Let's look at impact.

Can Amen's defense be as impactful as Draymond Green's defense? Probably.
Can Amen's passing be as good, get as many assists? Probably.
Can his rebounding be better? Yes.
    Stocks be the same? Yes.

Draymond was practically a no-points player so he required the greatest shooter in history to make this work. Amen is not a no-points player bro. As a starter he's averaging like 15 per 36. This is when you go from role player with a liability to star with a weakness that can be hidden.

We may be witnessing the only wing in the NBA who can overcome his own non-shooting. I don't think even Ausar can achieve it because he's not as good at creating points. Amen has a chance to the exception. It would have to a totally new archetype to break the rule. It makes sense.

Edit: from re-reading your post, perhaps what you're talking about is a scoring star?

At this point in time? Amen Thompson's defense is nowhere near that of prime Draymond or Ben Wallace.

Interesting one - this is even better than the Fred, Dillon, Amen, Tari Alpi lineup (again, super small sample size).

    +76.3 in 39 possessions

    Fair point by some...

Is it plausible that one of Jalen or Fred loses their spot to Jabari?

Starting lineup will stay the same. Jabari will reclaim his spot. Amen goes back to super sub.

Yeah, why didn’t OP include his boy Jalen?

Starting lineup on top/first; then Amen in place of each starter

Use the bottom lineup and sub in Jalen as 6th man.

If you look at how this lineup has played so far this season, and scale it to roughly the length of one NBA game, they would lose by about 55 points with a score of 72-127.

okay, but they would never play the length of one NBA game. They would just be the starters. How would they lose by 55 points, particularly when you have such a strong second team coming in to relieve them?

In 46 possessions this season where we used exactly your suggested lineup, the Rockets got outscored by roughly 55 points (scaled to a full game). The offense was worse than 99.99999% of any other offensive lineup in the league, and the defense was almost as bad.

So your argument to use this lineup is that other lineups are much better and that will make up for how bad this one is?

Right? Not even on the poll?

The little old man, who pisses off referees and can’t shoot. That guy.
