Robbie Williams has been around a LONG time. Very popular in the UK. Movie looks like its gonna be pretty good.
After looking him up, I remember his song Millennium. It pops into my head a few times a year. I can see why Take That and Williams music didn’t hit in the USA- it was all about grunge and rock and rap/hip-hop for most people in the 1990s. I did like nascent EDM back then but it wasn’t mainstream and on the radio.
I thought this was a movie about Blur vs Oasis or something (Britpop). Not "Brit Pop" (like, boy bands). Boo!
Back for Good by Take That is a great song but I don’t know of any other songs by them because they were so much popular in the UK compared to the US. Millennium was an OK song but this whole concept of Robbie Williams being a monkey is beyond weird and strange…
I love (I will never see this movie, btw, not my music not my thing) that they went full spectacle with this, not just another "Ray, Cash, Elvis, Whoever..." boring biopic. The dude's a ****ing monkey. Respect.
Why Did ‘Better Man’ Bomb With a $1M Debut Despite a $110M Budget? Did Paramount's gamble on Robbie Williams as a CGI chimp in 'Better Man' pay off? With a $110M budget and a $1M opening, let's dissect this audacious musical biopic. https://www.filmofilia.com/why-did-better-man-bomb-with-a-1m-debut-despite-a-110m-budget-196483/
Wife and I watched it over the weekend and both were really impressed. Neither of us know much about Williams but the film has an impressive authenticity that's missing in most musical biopics even though a CGI monkey, a blunt metaphor, is the main character. Great flow from start to finish and some really impressive musical numbers that make great use of Williams' music A- from me.....
To be clear, they're talking about the US box office. I think they overestimated the 40 year old British woman who likes monkeys in the USA demographic. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt14260836/ Looks like it did almost 5m in the UK. That's fairly respectable but again, the demo is 40 year old British women...who like monkeys. Maybe just too weird. Advertising was weird for the USA. Was it for adults or kids? Why a monkey? Who is this British guy? Was it a biopic? It assumes much and doesn't explain anything. This isn't a known IP to me, paint me a picture. Sell me. Sounds like executives at the studio either loved Robbie Williams and/or wanted to **** him and said 'this is gold, Robbie! gold!' Maybe this guy:
