According to the chart above age related decline is well on it's way by age 28 and continues apace from then on.
Altuve needs 4 more years of 2024 production. 185 hits per year and then the 5th year needs 28 hits. Altuve will be 35 in May. He can’t get hurt and can’t get old for another 5 years. Can he play second base for another 5 years?
Who knows, maybe we will trade for Bregman at the trade deadline. Thats when his season kind of starts.
No, he can't be productive defensively at 2nd for another 5 years. I believe he will play through 2027 and retire after a negotiated financial settlement that pays the remainder of his contract for services rendered.
Unless he is Jose Abreu bad, I find it hard to believe they are just going to cut him, especially if he has any chance of getting to 3K hits. He's not going to retire on his own.
Yeah, already edited it. He still counts for $50M for luxury tax purposes during those two seasons though.
His arm strength would be a way bigger issue than the few balls he can't reach because of his height.
José Altuve’s annual salary for 2028 and 2029 is $10 million each season, the luxury tax hit (or AAV) for his five-year, $125 million extension is $25 million per season. This calculation is based on the average annual value (AAV) of the contract, which MLB uses for luxury tax purposes, regardless of how the salaries are structured annually.
Well he must’ve been pretty awful since Duster started Meyers and Julks the next season instead of him.
Biggio was playing 2nd every day in 2005 despite costing the team -11 defensive runs ... and was still marched out there in 2006 and 2007.
I believe Altuve has too much pride in himself and his team to continue after he is able to contribute meaningfully.
The final two years of Altuve's contract are very inexpensive, perhaps even negligible by Altuve's standards. If he wants to retire I am sure the team would have no problem paying off the remainder of his contract.
