perhaps some of our Denmark posters would like to weigh in on this

Trump wants to buy Greenland, again, after claiming US could take back ownership of Panama Canal: ‘Absolute necessity’

    https://nypost.com/2024/12/23/us-ne...-may-be-interested-in-buying-greenland-again/

    excerpt:

President-elect Donald Trump said he wants the US to own and control Greenland — a desire he made known during his first presidential term — as he announced his pick for US ambassador to Denmark on Sunday.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump said in a statement on Truth Social.

His comments on Greenland came in the same statement Trump used to announce he has selected PayPal co-founder Ken Howery for the ambassadorship to Denmark.

When trump’s fans, like the OP, see lunacy like “buying Greenland” pouring out of trump’s mouth, what do they think of it? Is trump going to war with NATO ally Denmark? That is the only way to acquire Greenland. Like I said, pure fanciful lunacy pouring from the fool’s mouth. Denmark, a small wealthy country, will never sell the huge island, to the United States or any other country, in my opinion. Why would they? More to the point, why on earth would Denmark sell Greenland to the United States simply because trump wants it?

What the hell is Denmark even doing with Greenland? Sell it to someone who can make use of its resources.

Trump’s Wish to Control Greenland and Panama Canal: Not a Joke This Time
In recent days the president-elect has called for asserting U.S. control over the Panama Canal and Greenland, showing that his “America First” philosophy has an expansionist dimension.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/23/us/politics/trump-greenland-panama-canal.html

    excerpt:

Not surprisingly, the government of Greenland immediately rejected Mr. Trump’s demands, as it did in 2019, when he first floated the idea. “Greenland is ours,” Prime Minister Mute B. Egede said in a statement. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

The Danish prime minister’s office was more circumspect, writing in a statement that the government was “looking forward to working with the new administration” and offering no further comment on Mr. Trump’s remarks.

    ***
Arctic experts did not dismiss Mr. Trump’s Greenland bid as a joke.

“Not that many people are laughing about it now,” said Marc Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defense College in Denmark who focuses on Arctic security.

Mr. Jacobsen noted that the reaction in Denmark to Mr. Trump’s latest bid had been one of fury (one Danish politician called it “an unusually strange way to be an ally”). But, he said, Greenlanders — who have long sought independence — may seek to use Mr. Trump’s interest as an opportunity to further strengthen economic ties with the United States.

Since 2009, Greenland has had the right to declare its independence, but the vast territory of about 56,000 people is still heavily dependent on Denmark and has never chosen to pursue that path. Mr. Trump’s interest could give Greenland an opening for more U.S. investments, including in tourism or rare earth mining, he said.

“Was it crazy when the U.S. acquired Alaska? Was it crazy when the U.S. built the Panama Canal?” asked Sherri Goodman, a former Pentagon official and a senior fellow with the Wilson Center Polar Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

Ms. Goodman, whose book “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security” centers in part on the Arctic, said the United States did have a strong interest in ensuring that China in particular does not develop a strong presence in Greenland.

What is wrong with expressing a desire to buy Greenland?

How do you jump from that expression of interest in purchasing something to “Is Trump going to go to war with Denmark?” - thats incoherent.

Who said anything about war besides you? Because you have Trump derangement syndrome and just make up some ridiculously evil thing in your mind.

Why shouldn’t an American President express interest in acquiring strategic and resource rich overseas possessions? It’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Greenland is a largely uninhabited territory thousands of miles from Denmark. Why wouldn’t it be something that could be purchased by the United States? If they say “no” - fine. The United States can make offers and try to negotiate for its acquisition and Denmark can say “no.”

Nothing wrong with any of that.

Clearly, @HTM, you don’t understand just how ludicrous trump’s desire to obtain Greenland is. Denmark isn’t the least bit interested, and the people of Greenland certainly aren’t, so who will sell the island to the good old USA? trump has been turned down once already during his first term.

Greenland again tells Trump it is not for sale

Greenland has once again said it is not for sale after US President-elect Donald Trump said he wanted to take control of the territory.

"Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland," its prime minister said on Monday, a day after Trump repeated comments about the Arctic island that he first made several years ago.

Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory, is home to a large US space facility and lies on the shortest route from the US to Europe, meaning it is strategically important for America.

There was no immediate response to Trump's comments from Denmark.

Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, the US president-elect said: "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."

His comments prompted a sharp rebuke from Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede, who said: "We are not for sale and we will not be for sale."

"We must not lose our long struggle for freedom. However, we must continue to be open to co-operation and trade with the whole world, especially with our neighbours," he said.

Trump's controversial remarks came hours after he announced that he intended to nominate Ken Howery, his former ambassador to Sweden, to be the new ambassador to Denmark.

Mr Howery said he was "deeply humbled" by the nomination and looked forward to working with the staff at the US embassy in Copenhagen and the US consulate in Greenland to "deepen the bonds between our countries".

Trump's original suggestion in 2019 that the US acquire Greenland, which is the world's largest island, led to a similarly sharp rebuke from leaders there.

The then Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederickson, who still holds the role, described the idea as "absurd", leading Trump to cancel a state trip to the country.

He is not the first US president to suggest buying Greenland. The idea was first mooted during the 1860s under the presidency of Andrew Johnson.

We've already got significant military assets in Greenland (Thule Air base). It's in the best interest of the world for the USA to maximize the resources and arctic location that Greenland offers.
