Harris campaign aide accuses Musk of throttling content before election
BY ALEX GANGITANO - 12/16/24 10:52 AM ET

A campaign aide to Vice President Harris accused tech billionaire Elon Musk of throttling content on X ahead of the 2024 election, when Harris lost to president-elect Trump.

Harris’s deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty, in an interview with Semafor, argued that Musk purchasing X, formerly known as Twitter, was “a problem” for Democrats in this election.

“Its importance was twofold. One, it was where you reach elites and high-information people. But two, it was also the kind of place where politics could sort of careen into culture. And so it was a really important central node, even if it wasn’t the farthest-reaching platform,” Flaherty said.

He added, “Having that node be fundamentally controlled by, effectively, an arm of the Trump campaign was not good. Really a problem. And so Elon obviously sort of achieved his ends there. It was obvious that center-left and left content was being throttled compared to right content.”

Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX executive, supported Trump through his influence, as well as by spending at least $250 million throughout the election cycle. He donated nearly $239 million, including in-kind contributions, to America PAC, his super PAC that backed Trump’s Oval Office bid, according to FEC reports filed earlier this month.

Musk, along with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, has since been put in charge of his administration’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) and tasked with tackling government waste.

He has also been a part of Trump’s inner circle in recent months, most recently sitting with the president-elect at the Army-Navy game on Saturday.

You made a big deal of censorship by social media companies. How is this different?

Also - this would violate election law.

I am just relaying an article I found interesting. You'll note I did not comment on it.

on the other hand, it's not like Twitter banned Trump the last time around. So I guess that was okay. lol

The right wing certainly held this opinion when they felt Twitter was meddling with the Hunter Biden stuff for the 2020 election.

You also specifically went on a tirade with the social media platforms dictating things that overlapped with your sense of free speech as well, which feels related in a way.

don't you think it's just a little bit ironic for Kamala's minions to be claiming they were censored on a social media platform that just four short years earlier imposed an outright BAN on the sitting president of the United States?

also . . . I would like to see what evidence the Harris minions can produce to demonstrate that they were interfered with and/or censored

also . . . isn't it interesting that a Democrat would say that Twitter is "where you reach elites and high-information people."

I thought Twitter was exclusively for uneducated low-information Trumpers. I am so confused.

Personally I don't think it matters much. Twitter is what Twitter is. Social media it's primarily an echo chamber, and you'll leave it in search of something else or you'll just serve as an antagonist.

as in, "we have no evidence so we'll just say it was obvious."

Sure, just as ironic as caring about it before as a serious issue and laughing at it now.

On this (the legitimacy of the claim) I have no idea, I don’t have Twitter and don’t know any of the statistics. I still don’t know the details of Hunter Biden stuff outside of what I outlined above.

You seem to be a lot more into it than me though so I’ll defer.

Yeah it's impossible that Musk - part of the Trump team, would put his thumb on the scale with Twitter to help him. Of course he did.

    "It's not fair" lol - that's commentary.

Yes, and it was wrong to ban him even though he did violate their TOS.

Remind me again when the Trump ban happened. Was it before or after the 2020 election?

I don't care about this story, but adding an ironic GIF is commentary.

“It was obvious that center-left and left content was being throttled compared to right content.”

Not sure if there is much of a difference between saying left content was throttled compared to right content, and saying right content was boosted compared to left content. The latter seems likely to be true, just from the content I was seeing shortly before I stopped using it. I don’t know that Musk specifically throttled certain left accounts. But I suppose the algorithm could yield the same effect by boosting Trumpy accounts that he promotes.

Haven’t read this fully, but seems like it might answer your question with regards to evidence:
