So… this is kinda headline p*rn-ish.

My understanding is that yes, technically it’s correct. A classical computer would take a gajillion years to solve, but the problem they solved is called Random Circuit Sampling, which basically is a problem specifically designed for quantum computers to do. Classical computers can’t really simulate this problem, they aren’t designed to do so, so this comparison means basically nothing. It’s like saying your car can drive exponentially faster than your coffee grinder, it doesn’t really make sense.

Apparently they did show that the computer could perform the calculation with a low amount of error, which is significant progress nonetheless, but I don’t think the singularity has been reached just yet.

Quantum computing is gonna be the next big game-changer. ....in both good and bad ways.

Prior to Rigetti, Dr. Rigetti worked in the quantum computing group at IBM Research. Dr. Rigetti’s research focused on the development of novel silicon-based chip architectures, control schemes and system-level designs for practical quantum computing systems.

Dr. Rigetti is an inventor of 38 issued U.S. patents and author of more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications with more than 4,000 citations. He holds a Ph.D. in applied physics from Yale University and a B.S. in physics with honors from the University of Regina.

    **********

He might have moved on from the company that he founded. Maybe consider an investment in the company as Speculative rather than a Sure Thing.

Like cold fusion, we're always 5-10 years away from something big in quantum computing

This is a stretch, cold fusion is a scam. Sustainable/net + fusion is a 5-10 year thing

I think Google will do it. Oppenheimer would have been proud
