Who was his best draft pick in the 2-10 rounds? Who was his 2nd?

Didn’t know that how we should evaluate a GM

He set up one of the best sports decades for an organization of my lifetime

Tnsts good enough for me without worrying about certain rounds of the draft

Jeff was a brilliant organizational man

He knew how to find great people and surround himself with him, and that’s exactly what he did. He built an organization that was brilliant at what they did

That was the worst thing about Crane dumping him, he didn’t know how to replace all the other organizational people we lost

    Lol, ok

So if we didn’t make the playoffs we would be doomed right now. Losing those games to Detroit saved us?

    Gotcha

    Horseshit.

People were talking about the Astros building/rebuilding through the draft and were saying "oh I wish Luhnow was here".

I was just, not saying that Luhnow was not a great GM for the Stros because of course he was, saying that Luhnow was not the draft wizard some of yall think he was. He was frankly kind of mediocre at it.

Most GM’s are mediocre at drafting players. In baseball, there’s way more unpredictability.

    2023 Astros had 90 wins.
    2024 Asros had 88 wins.

Most years 90 wins does win a division and is borderline playin.

More or less, the Astros have just been running it back the last two years. Some may say that injuries have really hurt the Astros and they would be right … but injuries happen to an aging team.

The Astros were lucky to win the division the last two years and I would not be surprised if they do not in 2025.

Luhnow's rounds 2-10, Career WAR mentioned (exceptions noted), between 2012 and 2019

Laureano (16th round) 13+, minimal with Astros
Brett Phillips 4.7, minimal with Astros
Sandoval and Straw (11th/12th), minimal with Astros
    Meyers/Chas/Rojas (16thish)
    Pena!
    Hunter Brown!

That's around 75 picks, and those are the ones who have a career WAR over 2.

You are the worst Houston Cougar in the history of Houston Cougars.

They fry grease at Frenchy's tries to cry when it looks at you.

We've been experiencing " death of a thousand cuts" for quite awhile now.

We kept most of them for a while but when many left for promotions or because Click was an ass, they had a hard time finding the right people to replace them. I still think Brown is a better scout and I think he's smart enough to know how good our development guys are to leave them alone. I also believe in moving people up fast when they are top tier talent. We will see how well he does moving forward. Unfortunately Brown has to deal with high expectations that Luhnow never had to deal with.

He built a dynasty despite what you're saying in this post. Being the best at scouting the Caribbean more than made up for his draft mistakes.

I don understand why if Manfred made Crane fire Luhnow, why didn't Crane promote from within and keep all of the people/processes in place?

They should always do what it takes to make the playoffs if making the playoffs means trading 2-3 mid level prospects for a guy that gives you a shot at a championship. Even if it's a small shot at a championship. Maybe they get lucky and get hot at the right time to win a championship.

True, but he did hit on star level players and enough secondary type minor league players that he could trade them to add players like JV/Geinke etc....

Where Luhnow made his money was scouting in the Caribbean. Nobody was better

Because Manfred also wanted Crane to show the world that the team is moving on and no longer being run by the cheaters. That can't happen if he promotes from within.

    I hate Manfred.
