If you think he didn't "impact" the game last night, you didn't watch it. There's a reason why he had the second highest +/-.
My expectation is just a Jordan Clarkson/Monk type of player. Let him ride when he’s hot but don’t let him hero-ball us out of the game
Green's defensive improvement is no longer debatable. He's pretty clearly a plus defender at this point. Here's how his 106 defensive rating ranks among players averaging 30+ mpg.
...the downside there is Amen and Tari need more minutes to get over 30+ so they are competing with Jalen's minutes but I agree with you that Green has been a solid one on one defender especially last night just staying in front of guys and making shots difficult. If he can improve his off ball help defense a bit more, he can improve his defensive rating significantly because right now he is largely not effective as a help defender.
Just to state my case for Brogdon vs Ingram, if im not mistaken Brogdon has familiarity with Udoka from Boston. He averages about 40% from three for his career. He can play on or off ball and back up both Fres and Jalen which this team sorely needs. I love Reed and ive personally got no issue developing just like we have been, but if they wanted to push for maximum success this season replacing his minutes with a win now player would help. Holiday, imo, isnt wort it but someone like Brogdon moves the needle enough to do it. Hes also cheaper and would more than likely be easier to aquire and easier to resign if thats what they wanted to do. Even if hes a one year rental, not a big deal. Also, what i was getting at in my last post if you add Ingram he is really a wing and he'll probably need to start and be resigned to a big contract. Youd almost certainly have to trade a core member of the team...chemistry, playing style...thats important and i dont think Ingram moves the needle enough to jeopardize those aspects. Wheras Brogdon is a really good player that would make the team quite a bit better and give Jalen and Fred insurance without rocking the applecart much. JMO.
According to defensive rating Reed Sheppard is already pretty clearly a plus defender, he's even better than Rudy Gobert defensively. I think defensive rating is a completely useless stat, but to each their own.
I don't think so, Rudy Gobert is trash. Dunno how someone can win dpoy that many times and yet no one in the league respects his defense. Every player licks their chops when he's guarding them. That what can he actually stop?
i think you can't really draw conclusions on a player you averages 12 mins a game https://www.nba.com/stats/players/a...VIATION*E*hou:MIN*GE*20&dir=A&sort=NET_RATING
If he was trash, nobody would be licking its chops to posterize or put him in a blender sort of move and mock him that way. 2 reasons he is really a good defender, steady but not outstanding. He is also very goofy and a klutz. He is sort of that defender that establishes a system for a young team (Jazz) (Wolves) but individually I did not see him as an outstanding or quick defender. He is French, nobody likes French people, goes for Wemby as well. Has to do with womanizing, being arrogant, conceited, rude at times, the basic vibe, of course not everyone. PS: He has these unnecessary run-ins with his own team mates, I think the one with Kyle Anderson, then with Donovan Mitchell. ----- overly sensitive.
I think you are missing the point if you think this is about role players vs numero unos. There is value in what Houston has today - 10 high level guys who can take it at teams for 48 full minutes - we are winning that way right now. When you start talking about upgrading to a 'numero uno' it assumes some version of a consolidation trade which eats into that depth that has made us successful and thus puts more pressure on you to get the right numero uno. The player we acquire in that concept might be an upgrade over Jalen Green but if it cost you Green and others, then that player needs to be positive upgrade over multiple players and frankly I don't see the market of guys who are going to be an upgrade if you lose both Green and Jabari or Green and Tari, etc.
After Thunder's game, would u consider green a good capable defender or is he being carried by superior defenders? Personally i think he can hold his own b/c why else would he get heavy mins in the game if he's not scoring or chucking the ball
He has physical gifts, quickness, nobody denied that but you can only see if he has enough defensive instincts and intelligence when his athleticism is waning and he has to use positioning and experience instead. Let's say he is on the Wizards instead or alongside Jordan Poole, he is going to have to defend by himself and without Udoka helping. That whole team cannot defend and is tanking.
Defensive rating is intended to compare to similar lineups on your own team, it doesn't compare across teams. Have never understood why people even try that. However, Green has been - on average - an above average defender this season. It's not easy being the 5th or whatever best defender on an elite defensive team. You have to be above average. Anyone who has been watching the games can see he's been above average on defense for 50ish games now.
of the 7 rockets averaging at least 20 mins this season, Jalen is WORST in DEF RTG, 2ND to the WORST in OFF RTG, WORST in NET RTG https://www.nba.com/stats/players/a...VIATION*E*HOU:MIN*GE*20&dir=A&sort=DEF_RATING
I know, I understand how defensive rating is calculated. It has nothing to do with whether Jalen is an above average defender at SG this season.
Context mattered back in March too. Many didn’t listen. Context only matters when it agrees, it seems.
+/- is a useless stat. FVV had 38 points on excellent efficiency and had a negative +/-. If Jalen had 38 points and negative +/- you wouldn't site the stat.
I mean, ok? It’s not a useless stat when equalized, ie comparing players while played similar amounts. It’s only useless when used to compare players playing disparate amount of minutes.
