Ya, i like that his defense is solid. For him to be this bad on offense and to be a legit starter though he would need to be ELITE on defense and he's not that. If he could come close to lavine level though that would be incredible.

You haven't looked at the 2026/27 cap then ..... that contract is a total disaster if he isn't playing up to it by then.

Between now and then, no MLE, no BAE and letting FVV expire, and you are still a fraction away from the 2nd apron in 2026 if you resign both Tari & Bari (@17-20% of the cap, not close to max) .... with Amen due the following year.

I didn't think it was all that bad at first myself, seemed a fair gamble by both sides but if he isn't earning it in 26, that contract has to go or else you are giving up someone you probably don't want to.

I agree - but they can move him for a reasonable cost by that point if they need to. The larger issue is that the Rockets are going to need to sign and pay all of these guys and none of them are franchise players. So unless someone REALLY steps up in the next year or two, the Rockets may be in no man’s land.

We already have a franchise player, called Sengun.

And we have Amen and Tari, who are both amazing.

    And Reed.

And Jalen and Jabari and Cam.

    And we are 14-6.

    That's not no man's land.

You keep saying it's not that bad, it won't hurt anything but that's just inaccurate.

I've pointed out the disaster that is the 26/27 cap a couple times but the pain actually starts this coming offseason - they have to give up something to keep Jalen.

Next year's cap is $154,647,000, the luxury tax is $187,122,870.

The team starts the offseason over the luxury tax with an active roster of 11 players for a combined $188,050,805.
The first apron is $195,946,000 - you are $5,622,326 away from that. What this means is you cannot use the NT-MLE, only the T-MLE ($5,685,000) which caps you at the second apron and that's only $17,501,326 away.
    Y
Sure, you can decline FVV's option and create ~19m in cap space .... but you are giving up FVV for no return and Jalen's contract is the issue - it's either that or signing him to a longterm deal.

The next year, things are even uglier with Tari and Jabari being RFA.

Yep, there's things they can do to avoid that, but it involves sacrificing a player you probably prefer to keep.

I think what Nook tries to say is that the NBA is a revolving door - an ongoing business.....

The team is doing really well but there are still issues to be solved.....deals to be made.....contracts to be extended and signed.....etc.

What people missed is that Denver needed 2 Franchise players .....1 was not enough to be a mini dynasty.

They just stopped dealing so Pope left and Bruce Brown left.......rested on their laurels.

I've said before that I think it's far more likely they opt-out and resign FVV at like 25 - 30 mil per. However, even assuming they opt into his contract next year, we'd be fine — we'd just have to waive Landale and maybe Holiday and we'd be at like 174. Neither would be that big of a loss.

I've posted similar charts before, but here is our future cap sheet which includes the following assumptions:
    • We opt into FVV's deal next season, then let him walk
    • We waive Landale and Holiday next offseason
    • We keep all our draft capital, which hit around 12 - 20
    • We sign Bari and Tari to 5 years / 300 mil total between the two of them (divvy it up how you wish - I did 5 yrs / 150 mil each)
    • Extend Amen at the max
Again, I think it's more likely that we extend FVV at a lower cap figure, but either way, we'll be fine.

It will be interesting to see what they can re-sign FVV at and for how many years. Will be it be something longer and more team friendly like 4 years / $88M? Or a shorter term deal 2 years / $60M? 3 years / $75M?

Yeah, that negotiation is will dictate a lot going forward. One really interesting proposal I saw was to extend with an opt in. So, instead of 3 / 75 at 25 per year, the cap breakdown would be 45 / 15 / 15.

Interesting. I like that a lot to help maintain depth as soon as the Jabari and Tari deals kick in and should still leave room for Amen.

No, that's not what Nook said. First, he said "none" of our current prospects are franchise players despite the fact that (1) Sengun is FIFTH in PIE at 22 yrs old; and (2) Amen looks to have DPOY potential.

Then, he said that we'd be in purgatory if we kept this core despite the fact that we are SECOND in the West with a ton of quality wins...and our oldest prospect is 23.

What he said was absolute nonsense.

yeah, this was a massive blunder…
I now seen players from that draft who, like Green, showed flashes but still have plenty of question marks - these players didn’t get extended. Cam Thomas, Kuminga, Giddey, none of these guys got a deal.
    That was a massive blunder

Out of all the players we didn't draft, feels like I actually feel bad about this one.

My favorite player out of that draft other than Sengun. feel like we'd be contenders for years had we drafted Sengun and Wagner. Oh well no use crying over spilled milk

Why would Amen get the max when Alpi took less?

What does one have to do with the other, cap situations will be completely different

Sengun got a rare player option. He’ll be able to sign a 5 yr / 30 - 35% contract at 26 yrs old.

Maybe Banchero was holding Wagner back.
