It's funny that your takeaway from all this is that you dislike impact metrics, I'm the complete opposite. I agree with literally everything you wrote about it, but this is actually why I like it. I'm really interested in stats like this but a very important part of them is understanding exactly what they measure, and then understanding how to contextualize it. Like if you look at the rockets player with the best BPM this year its Jeenathan Williams. Is he the rockets best player, then? Obviously not. So then does that make the stat bad? No, not to me, you just have to understand what you're looking at. The guy has only played 7 minutes and has a 90% TS, so his BPM should be through the roof, that shows the stat is working as intended. So for me these stats are just one piece of a giant puzzle, and I enjoy figuring out how that puzzle fits.

Seems like a good stat. Based on plus/minus numbers I'd looked at previously, the top 5 in this list were the best there as well. I'd like to see that lineup a little more.

    Noteworthy bits:

    1) Improved defender, not an impactful help defender. Below league average from a TS% at a 51.6 which is ten points lower than league average.
    2) Overall negative on defense, better than before though. Still hates the contract.
    3) Might just be a bad shooter.
    4) Says Jalen Green fans think of him as a great finisher at the rim and he isnt. 35th percentile. Footwork and inability to slow down an issue. Talks about his elbow mechanics being an issue with his shooting.
    5) Goes over some Milwaukee footage of him getting blocked at the rim and losing the ball after getting doubled. Missing assignment on Lopez to give up a 3. A cut to the rim where he gets blocked again. Gets walled off by AJ Green easily who coerces him into a bad stepback. Just not a good driver. Easily gets turned back. Says Shaedon Sharpe is more skilled offensively. Took another bad stepback 3 with 18 seconds left on the clock.
    6) Questions Sengun and Jalen's chemistry on screens. Seems like Sengun doesn't know exactly what Jalen wants to do.
    7) Tried to outleap Giannis and got stuffed. Ongoing pattern.
    8) Shows 2 relocation threes with better decision making and awareness on relocation. Another drive vs Lopez that gets denied. Can't slow down. Implies that the scouting report basically says that Jalen simply will continue a forward trajectory if barreling towards the rim.
    9) 1/9 on floaters this year. No floater game. Challenges Lopez again....gets turned over. Shows the acrobatic shot over Lopez. Doesn't like the shot, should've passed out to Holiday.

Overall a poor team defender, a poor decision maker on offense. Compounded with being a bad shooter who can't really slow down when going downhill....is just a really bad cocktail for a SG. It's just not there and doesn't seem to be getting there.

This is true for every stat, you need to understand what they measure and I always do that. The case of a small sample in the example you gave is true for all stats. What I mainly dislike are being too noisy and most people not understanding what it means, so it cannot be used as part of a discussion. To make it worse, they rely on the name to understand what the stat represents and that makes it even worse most of the time. To be fair most people don't even understand offensive/defensive ratings are not individual stats.

There are some level headed Jalen fans that know his weaknesses.....and the little portion of hard core stans are waning.....they still think he can be Jordan.

    • Before this season, he wanted to be Kyrie and expand his scoring bag, but all he does now is chuck 3s.

    • If he can make 1 or 2 All Star appearances that is a major accomplishment, not holding my breath.

All things we already know about Jalen. Doesn't play smart only has 1 speed. Likes to shoot more than pass.
I also like the part of the video showing where Jalen needs to help and rotate. Instead his fans love to blame sengun for getting scored on when it was Jalen's job to come off and help...

This is why regression analysis is used heavily by NBA teams. I say NBA teams because the public sphere on this kind of analysis has been lagging due to NBA teams aggressively gobbling up talents over the years and they're really, really secretive about what they let out. But you can be certain that traditional stats and eye tests are not a large part of how the Rockets analyze players.

    But... it's Silas' fault!

    Also... Jalen has creation responsibilities!

Lastly... he only misses at the rim because Sengun clogs the lane!

Clearly the Multiverse of Jaters are holding Jalen back.

He would have been known as the Dry hump Mamba by now.

traditional stats or something like pie is too high level to be useful for an nba team. They need more tracking data. I don’t even see a use case for pie for an nba team, it is more for the media and the fans. Traditional stats do have their value though, though an nba team would dive into the tracking data ta see the details of those stats.

Stone really screwed up extending Jalen prematurely at big money. Maybe some of the independent analysis from guys like Vecenie will give the Jalen appologists a dose of reality. I’m watching what Brooklyn gets for Cam Thomas. That would have been the absolute floor for the return we could have gotten for Jalen this season. Now we are tethered to near max commitment for a guy who can’t shoot, dribble or get to the rim consistently.
