Definitely our best player & go to player down the stretch. Without Jalen we don't win 10 games so far. We just need to speed up the offense & get Sengun to start hitting 3s
Jaters still going? Man you have to give that level of hate a tip of the cap. They are here just for the love of the shtpost and the flame wars. Its almost poetic.
Jalen still has a chance to turn into a superstar. It's so frustrating that this is still unclear at this stage. I agree that it'd be better to lose a guy for nothing than to overpay him in the long run because we have a bunch of promising young players waiting in line for the big pay day.
I completely disagree. Once we paid Sengun, we had committed to being an over the cap team, and Jalen's contract won't really inhibit us from resigning our own players. We could literally pay Bari, Tari, and Amen the max (which won't happen) and still never be over the apron. In a couple seasons, when it's time to renegotiate, the team will have a really good sense of who is our core and can proceed accordingly. The is especially true now that Jalen is playing well on the defensive end. This heightens his floor tremendously. What you lay out -- letting him walk for nothing -- would absolutely be awful. Jalen has a lot of value signed to his current contract. He definitely would be a valuable piece in a trade. The idea of letting him walk for nothing when his contract isn't impacting our cap sheet much is absurd.
This is incorrect. Even if you take off every vet on this team other than Brooks (FVV, Adams, Uncle Jeff, etc.) fill in a couple of low 1st round picks and veteran minimum players, and put in Jabari/Tari max or near max extensions, you'd still be looking at being right at the second apron or above it, pending how fast the cap raises each year. There's no scenario in which the Rockets can afford to pay more than 2 of their youngsters the next couple of years with the Jalen extension. They would have to really slash payroll somewhere, either dumping Green or Brooks or both to clear space. And in this above scenario, I'm not even counting the Rockets using the MLE money for the next couple of years. If you add those they'd be 100% over the 2nd apron with hypothetical Jabari/Tari max money.
There’s nothing hateful about questioning prematurely spending $36 mil on a guy who can’t shoot efficiently or get to the line consistently. It’s called accountability and it’s fair, especially in season 4. If the guy isn’t producing (which has been his track record) it’s understandable folks are frustrated. Everyone agreed that Jalen really needed to come out and show improvement and consistency; that’s not what’s happened. Jalen is shooting 32% from 3 and he’s averaging less than 4 free throw attempts per game. $36 mil per!
Definitely our best player is a strange take, how do you come up with that? By on/off he's last out of the 7 guys who play and he's last by a mile. He's 5th in vorp ahead of jabari (barely) and dillon. Ahead of those 2 as well in BPM but jalen is in the negative. Win shares he's also last, 7th outa 7. Even if you're in the anti math/anti analytics crowd which i assume you are, there's no way you can watch him this season and say he's been better than alpi or amen or tari.
Meh. I may have been a little flippant when I said we can pay Bari, Tari, and Amen maxes (which isn’t going to happen anyway), but here's where we'd be if we (1) opted into FVV's contract next offseason; (2) paid Bari and Tari 150 mil / 5 years; and (3) gave Amen the max. Simply put, we're fine.
It is fair to worry about Jalen Green at this point. 39% from the floor - 32% on 3's this season and only like 45% on 2's. He is averaging 15 points the last 10 games and after scoring quite a bit the first 3-4 games, it has largely shriveled up. Some of it is the spacing issue caused by a lack of three-point shooters - but Green is supposed to be the guy on the offensive end and he is off to a slow start (again) on that end of the court.
...but that doesn't mean you let Jalen walk - you have contractual rights to something of value in the league. Whether you as another team want Jalen because he is a relatively short/expiring contract to help your team's cap position in the future, or whether you believe in Jalen's upside, or whether you are a contending team just trying to plug in some semblance of a starter around injuries to your core - it is irrelevant. The only thing that is relevant from Houston's perspective is that they need to trade him to make sure they are getting some value out of him. Maybe thats trading his salary + a couple of young guys to get some consolidation of better roster talent(as an example - maybe a Tyler Hero type?), maybe that's turning Jalen into a couple of cheaper role players so you don't feel the impact of letting Fred/DB go, maybe it's just giving Jalen away for some future draft compensation....but to @Houston77 's point, the worst thing you can do here is to let Jalen walk without getting something in return. Given Houston has a poor track record of attracting talent here via Free Agency, the only ways we have to build value in this roster is through growing value from the draft(Jalen, Jabari, Sengun, Cam, Eason, Amen, Reed) or by overpaying people to come here(Fred, DB, etc). Letting a player of Green's nature walk eventually may be necessary at some point to be able to afford everyone else, but you HAVE to at least given the token contract and explore the trade market now that Jalen's contract value and play is somewhat of a known quantity now.
How many players does the above chart account for in each season? Which players - what's the rotation look like? How many open roster spots??
Blame it on spacing when the shots he's missing are good shots, shots you want him to take .... coming off of actions to get him space like PnR, DHO & Catch and Shoot ... The same shots he was knocking down two weeks ago?? No, it's not spacing, it's a streaky shooter in a cold spell .... This is who Jalen is - a streaky shooter. When he's hitting shots, he's as good as any guard in the league, when he's not, he's awful (offensively).
It includes at least 10 players each season (including our upcoming FRPs). Again, this is assuming we opt into FVV’s contract, Bari and Tari get 150 mil each, and Amen gets the max. Y’all are worrying about nothing. Our cap sheet is clean.
The decision isn't whether to give him the extension or let him walk. It's whether to extend him or wait till end of this season, at which time you can either decide to keep him (through qualifying offer) or perhaps let him go by not using the QA. In fact you can even use the QA and he accepts and you get another year to examine him, at which point if he turns into a star, you pay him the full max with all the bells and whistles. The Rockets could've put off this decision for 2 years. They simply decided not to
That Apron room is clearly based on 10% rises each year. Which is unlikely to happen. But if it does, then Tari and Jabari aren't signing 5/$150 deals due to inflation. And so would any prospective MLE or BAE targets. But even if we assume all you say is true, this still assumes Tillman is going to pay that much luxury taxes. Do you know how much luxury tax Tillman has paid so far in his ownership? ZERO. Do you know how much luxury tax Rockets ownership as a whole as paid over these past decades? ZERO. So yeah, it's probably not a good idea to assume he's going to start doing that now.
I want him to develop a step back 16ft jumper. He’s got the athleticism to get separation. If he can’t stay on balance it would be an easy shot for him.
He's also very weak with the ball. Seems like he loses the ball in traffic a lot. Then you see Giannis and Lillard protecting the ball like brinks trucks on their way to the rim.
