kid walked to a store a mile away. the woman faces a year in prison.

Mom arrested after son was reported walking alone
The 41-year-old was arrested and charged with reckless conduct.

    https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Family/mom-arrested-after-son-reported-walking/story?id=115903965

    excerpt:

Brittany Patterson, 41, was arrested by deputies on Oct. 30 after a witness reported "a juvenile in the roadway" who had gone into and left a nearby Dollar General store, according to a Fannin County Sheriff's Office report.

Patterson's son, Soren, now 11, was later found by deputies around one mile from the family's home. Patterson had left Soren to take another one of her children to a doctor's appointment and didn't report him missing, according to the report.

    ***
During the arrest, Patterson also said to one of the deputies, "Last time I checked, it wasn't illegal for a kid to walk to the store."

But the deputy replied, "It is when they're 10 years old."

Note that is an extremely Republican area.

note that is an extremely rural area

not sure why the 10-year old's party affiliation is relevant

The sheriff and country's political affiliation. I generally assume the kid doesn't have a political affiliation.

She actually didn't let him, so much as left him home by himself and he chose to leave and go to the store.

But the point is this is a thread about government overreach, and in this case it is a Republican you are accusing of overreach.

Because it is an accusation of overreach, which generally is lobbed at Democrats.

If you want to know what I think, it isn't remotely overreach.

The reason its not, is she had zero idea where her 10 year old son was. She waited in the car on him to come out of the house, but when he didn't come out, she left. And they tried to let her go with a warning if she'd just sign off that she's going to do something to prevent it from happening again. She's making it into a big deal that she wants to make sure it is ok to not worry about the whereabouts of your elementary school aged children.

The problem isn't that she left him at home (it turned out he wasn't even home). The problem isn't that she let him walk to the store (she never actually let him, he just did). The problem is that she didn't know he wasn't home, left, and then didn't care when police picked him up in town. Then all they wanted was her to not let it happen again. I've been in that position as a kid and a parent. Its really not that damn hard.

So some leftists think the government should come after you if you left your 10 year old kid unattended for a while, but if you have your 10 year old kid's genitals mutilated, that's...great?
