The Brazen Evasions of Hunter Biden https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/16/opinion/hunter-biden-foreign-agent.html excerpt: With this month’s revelations that Hunter Biden directly contactedAmerican officials for the benefit of foreign clients in Ukraine and allegedly Romania, and with Mr. Biden facing a new trial next month stemming from charges of tax evasion for the millions he received from foreign sources, the time has come to finally charge him as an unregistered foreign agent. Originally enacted in 1938, the primary regulations targeting foreign lobbyists, known as the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), are straightforward, requiring Americans who are paid to push foreign interests to register their work with the federal government. It doesn’t make the practice illegal — lobbying is, thanks to the First Amendment, still a constitutionally protected right — but it does bring transparency to an otherwise opaque world, forcing foreign lobbyists to disclose what they’re doing, who they’re doing it for, and how much they’re being paid in the process. While FARA was unfortunately largely unenforced for decades after it took effect, the law has seen new life in recent years as prosecutors have finally begun going after unregistered foreign agents. We’ve known that myriad foreign companies and foreign oligarchs have targeted Mr. Biden, tossing significant sums at him while his father served as vice president. With each revelation, and with each new foreign client revealed, the president’s detractors have wailed that the younger Mr. Biden violated foreign lobbying laws, which required him to disclose what he was doing abroad — as well as reveal the Americans he’d been targeting on behalf of his foreign benefactors. Mr. Biden’s highly questionable foreign dealings have for years appeared more smoke than fire; there was previously no evidence that he illicitly lobbied any American officials. Compared to figures such as the former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort, who was caught out as an illegal foreign lobbyist (among plenty of other crimes), Mr. Biden’s alleged foreign lobbying misdeeds appeared to fall short of crossing the line into criminality. They may have put a lie to President Biden’s claimed concerns about foreign influence campaigns, but they were never worthy of formal charges. With the new details, though, that has changed, giving prosecutors the opening to pursue the president’s son as one of the most prominent foreign lobbyists the United States has ever seen. more at the link
I'm sure a pardon of hunter was worked into the Biden stepping down part of this election. If Harris is elected.
According to the article, it looks like Hunter's actions weren't criminal. It certainly sounds unethical, though. So there would be no additional criminal charges for Hunter.
Did Biden negotiate with himself? Between the day after the November POTUS election and the day before Biden steps down, Biden will likely pardon his son, without asking for anyone's opinion. A pardon is an expression of the President's forgiveness and ordinarily is granted in recognition of the applicant's acceptance of responsibility for the crime and established good conduct for a significant period of time after conviction or completion of sentence. It does not signify innocence.
Has Hunter Biden stepped down yet as the nominee for the Democratic Party?? Sounds like OsTrig thinks he’s running the country and attempting to become a dictator or something.
I wonder if other nationally known politicians should now be afraid that the DoJ will take an active interest in their tax fraud. Just saying.
I actually know one of the 51, he's as smart as they come but completely partisan, Democrat lefty through and through . . . almost irresponsibly so in my view. Have never broached the subject with him though.
He shouldn't. Hunter is guilty and skated by in life thanks to his dad already. If he wanted to consider it, commutation is more appropriate, but I'd want him to spend some time in prison.
i've met one of them too, but don't really know him. My brother on the other had is very good friends with this dude. he (the dude, not the bro) has been in the news a fair amount over the years.
https://althouse.blogspot.com/2024/12/pardon-your-son-let-republicans-howl.html an hour ago "Pardon your son. Let the Republicans howl. Who cares?" by noreply@blogger.com (Ann Althouse) That's the top-rated comment at the Washington Post's article "Hunter Biden’s team issues a fiery defense ahead of sentencing, possible pardon/Judges are scheduled to sentence the president’s son for gun and tax offenses in December." President Biden, we're told, "repeatedly said that he will not pardon or commute the sentences of his son." But, yeah, who cares? He was running for office, and he didn't even win on that promise. He didn't even lose. He got ousted by fellow Democrats who thought he couldn't win and then they lost. Worst loss ever. Ignominious. And he's still got to drag his ancient body through 7 more weeks of this "presidency" nobody thinks he can do anymore. Surely, he can do one thing — that thing maybe he can't even remember promising he wouldn't do — and pardon his only living son, the scoundrel Hunter. Who believes promises these days? Everyone promises anything and everything to get elected. Is he supposed to drag himself through his last days on Earth — his post-presidency days — with his son in prison? Is he supposed to satisfy himself instead with the hollow, icy honor of posing as a weirdly scrupulous man who kept a promise not to pardon his son? Promise? Was there really a promise? Love. Family love. That's the greater thing. No joke. Posted by Ann Althouse at 5:23 AM
