Yeah I have a feeling Sengun or Green will be traded within next 2 years.

Really interesting. I knew there was a discrepancy but didn’t know the actual numbers. That Sengun difference is especially massive.

If this happens, it means the team has failed and isn't headed anywhere.

No, I think it’s actually because either they do not work out together and or a “star” player could be had where we have to give up one of them.

This essentially makes trading them this year impossible especially Sengun. I don't know how any team can withstand 5M out, 31M in. No 3rd teams have enough cap space to just eat 26M to offset it. The most is Detroit with 10M.

Note: this will make trading Jabari next year difficult, too.

How much will the poison pill factor into Stone’s decision to extend Jabari, should he not improve much over last year? Next year could be a key trading year, as we get more info on the core.

Shouldn’t matter for Jabari as long you don’t extend him.

I'm surprised Bima decided to make a post about this one provision instead of a longer 'state of the rockets cap' podcast. But, maybe there was one that I missed.

I don't think this would be nearly as big of an issue with Jabari if he continues on his current trajectory. He current has the reverse contract situation of Sengun. He was drafted 3rd with star potential but is currently projecting as a role player. So, his contract would only be moderately higher than his 4th year salary, making it easier for teams to manage the poison pill if needed.

Bari and Cam seem to be the least to be getting a big contract.

For Bari it is still hard to figure out a bigger role, and Cam is not progressing that well.

Cam still has plenty of time to show his worth. He started the season in a slump but he’ll have opportunities to show his worth over the next two years when the inevitable injury bug bites.

It’s actually a good thing for him to get a ton of shots up to get his confidence back.

If the team isn't taking every opportunity to get better regardless of what seemed like the right option years earlier - then THAT is failure. Deciding you made the wrong choice and trying to turn that into value for another option is not a failure in the present at all my guy....

You gave them the contracts because you believed they will become stars. If you're willing to trade them for a 30 year old then the team didn't reach expectations. Not difficult. In fact, you would be trying to get a 30 year old star without giving up those 2. Y'all just want to trade trade because you don't like a player.

You gave them contracts because they are assets that you traded for a different asset more in line with the current vision of the team. The whole point of the draft is to create asset value in your organization - the #1 rule of the draft is not let your players go without getting some value from them.

By the way, I'm not advocating for trading Jalen or Alpi - but I wouldn't hesitate to trade either if it better positioned us to win a title in the future. If for example we decide Alpi isn't a good enough defender to stay on the court in the playoffs and have an option of trading him for a player who might not be as good offensively but is more playable and we found other ways to score on the roster(maybe Cam or Reed turn into scoring options), I would hope Houston does what needs to be done.

It's nothing personal - there is a vision for where you think your roster is going based on who you were left to choose from in the draft year after year - we choose best available and got the roster we got....and each of them develop and some end up blossoming in ways we didn't expect and others are disappointing but you gotta keep trading pieces out until you get the right mix of players who complement each other. You can't be too precious about yesterday decisions that didn't work out being "failures" - signing Jalen and Alpi were the best options at the time to retain value in the org.

Clutch asked me to write this one. I've mostly just been posting short cap updates on Twitter lately. (Spoiler Alert: The Rockets won't have cap room next summer.)

Thanks, everyone, for the positive feedback on the blog post.

Seemed like there wasn't really any clear fits that were remotely 'gettable' in Houston anyway. Myles Turner was the only one I saw and I would be surprised if he left Indy.
