Beshear apologizes to Diet Mountain Dew after knocking Vance’s ‘weird' joke
    by Tara Suter
    07/25/24 3:59 PM ET

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) apologized to Diet Mountain Dew at a press conference Thursday after criticizing Republican vice presidential candidate and Ohio Sen. JD Vance (R) for “weird” comments involving the drink.

“Folks, I’ve been a person that when sometimes I’ve gone over the line, I’ve wanted to make sure that I set the record straight, so, I do owe an apology to Diet Mountain Dew,” Beshear said at the press conference.

Beshear’s apology comes after he went after Vance for comments he made about Diet Mountain Dew at a Monday rally in Ohio. The Kentucky Governor has recently been among a few names being floated as possible vice presidential picks for Vice President Harris, and he has been targeting Vance over his connections to the Appalachian region.

When talking about voter identification at the rally, Vance said Democrats “say it’s racist to do anything.”

“I had a Diet Mountain Dew yesterday, and one today, I’m sure they’re gonna call that racist too but — it’s good,” Vance said.

In response to Vance’s comments, Beshear said they were “weird” in an interview on CNN Monday and questioned, “Who drinks Diet Mountain Dew?”

At his press conference Thursday, Beshear said he doesn’t “believe that government should be making your decisions.”

“So if you enjoy Diet Mountain Dew, you be you, we wanna support you,” Beshear continued. “And, to Diet Mountain Dew, very sorry, didn’t mean to say negative things about you.”

According to a frequently asked questions page about Mountain Dew, the drink “was invented in the 1940s by Tennessee beverage bottlers Barney and Ally Hartman and was first marketed in Marion, Virginia; Knoxville, Tennessee and Johnson City, Tennessee.” A significant portion of Tennessee and Virginia are considered to be a part of Appalachia, alongside Beshear’s home state of Kentucky.

The Hill has reached out to PepsiCo and a spokesperson for Vance.

Democrats accuse Cornel West campaign of accepting illegal in-kind contributions
    by Nick Robertson
    07/25/24 1:23 PM ET

Democrats are accusing Republican operatives of boosting the campaign of independent presidential candidate Cornel West in North Carolina and Arizona, as ballot access fights rage in key swing states.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) last week claiming West’s bids in Arizona and North Carolina took illegal in-kind contributions from Republican-aligned groups.

The complaint alleges that West’s campaign took on about $240,000 worth of petitioning services provided by two GOP-aligned groups, Wells Marketing LLC and the staff of Blitz Canvassing.

“The West campaign has publicly stated it is not paying any firm for the ballot petition services these firms are providing, while it is simultaneously accepting the benefits of those services,” the complaint reads.

“This series of illegal in-kind contributions are being paid for either by the corporate entities providing these services or by an unidentified third party,” it continues. “Because the campaign has failed to comply with its disclosure obligations under the law, the true source of the funding of its ballot access program remains hidden.”

Specifically, the DNC claims that West’s campaign violated Arizona law by allowing the canvassers to work on their behalf without paying them or authorizing their work with the FEC, therefore making the free work an illegal in-kind contribution. The Justice for All Party, backing West, committed the same violation in North Carolina, the DNC claims.

The North Carolina Board of Elections denied the Justice for All Party’s ballot application at a meeting last week. Democrats on the elections board claimed the group misled members of the public into signing petitions.

A group of West backers sued the state board on Monday, claiming it improperly denied the party’s application and that West should be placed on the ballot.

The attorneys behind that suit also have previous ties to Republican politics, previously representing the Republican National Committee and other GOP-aligned groups. It is unclear if the suit has any direct Republican backing.

Arizona’s ballot access deadline is next month, with the West campaign site listing its attempt to get on the ballot as “in progress.” The site also claims that West has achieved ballot access in North Carolina, despite its denial last week.

The Hill has reached out to the West campaign for comment.

Third-party campaigns, particularly that of Robert Kennedy Jr., have been an X factor in the 2024 race, with both Democrats and Republicans fearing such candidates could siphon votes from their candidates.

I am a Jewish progressive. Will I vote blue?

    excerpt:

I am Jewish. I am an Israeli American. I am gay. I am a progressive. In a typical election cycle, I vote Democrat up and down the ballot. But this November, I cannot confidently say that I will support the party I have always believed in.

Dang. Maybe only 64% of Democrats voted?

    That's a shame.

Looks like a lot of the collective self-deception and lack of self-awareness/self-reflection will continue. Gonna be a long four years

The usual hand wringing, talking, talking, talking and p***y ****.

That’s what’s great about representative democracy and bad about a two party system- we pick our representatives but the choices are binary.
