Individual def rating is an estimate much like per 100 or per 36. The metric simply shows pts allowed by a team with that player on the court per 100 possessions. It includes team def rating and team stops % etc and assumes that all 5 players uniformly play same minutes and exert the same effort on defense. Players def rating are influenced by how good their teammates are and lineups etc. That’s why people need to analyze what’s happening on the court. Numbers can be deceiving and only paint part of the picture especially if you only use one metric. This is why luka had a higher def rating than scottie barnes last year. What’s actually happening on the court? That can be a vastly different story
Guard defense isn't THAT significant, outside of the very very best (caruso currently, cp3 years ago in his prime) so for guards is a pretty useless stat. For centers though it's pretty meaningful, you'll never see a great defensive center have a bad rating
I'm talking about the accuracy ( or lack of) for the stat. Based on Drtg, Harden and Luka are better defenders than Marcus Smart and Dru Holiday. I also totally disagree that guard defense isn't significant. There's way more talented scoring guards than there are centers.
Curry was also higher than Mikal bridges 23-24. Issue with the metric is its an estimation using a few assumptions such as uniform distribution of time and points possession. And yeah a large part of the formula is based on team defense. Its deceptive
Rudy isn't the best defender in the league because he stops opposing centers, it's because he prevents attempts and makes around the rim, the best shots outside of free throws. I agree the stat isn't gonna accurate though, especially early in the season when it's mostly just variance and noise.
Exactly, If you go by drtg, then you believe that Nurkic, Sengun and Sabonis are better defenders than Gobert. Or that Jokic is a better defender than Adabayo. Obviously, they aren't.
And Drtg says that Nurkic, Sengun and Sabonis are better defenders than Gobert. Nobody believes that.
its the same as the silly Cam whitmore per 36 argument. These metrics should be taken with a grain of salt and used with numerous data and eye observation of what’s happening on the court.
i know, that's why i said the stat isn't gonna accurate though, especially early in the season when it's mostly just variance and noise.
Adams didn't play last night Not just pnr defense. We have given up a bunch of easy shots on straight line drives.
Generally speaking though, it's a decent stat to evaluate center defense (at the end of the season, not after a few games obviously)
I know what the stat is - there’s too much noise. it’s a team stat and you need to evaluate the entire lineups around sengun. that was morey’s point - you can’t isolate defense to individual players nearly as effectively as you can isolate offense to individual players. sengun plays with starters and there’s noise man.
There's no great defensive stats/metrics, what would be better? On/off is tough because if you have a terrible backup it inflates your stats a lot
Jock i meant. Also Smith in the small lineup. They couldn’t stop the pnr. Need the success rate on that but seemed every pnr they ran they scored
Yeah, figured that's wglhat you meant. We also played small a bunch too. It hurt on defense at the rim but it's what got us back in the game.
