This thread is to talk about Sengun’s defensive limitations.

Each time we go through a frustrating stretch of Sengun causing us to fall down by 30 or lose a winnable game with his defense, we can talk about it here.

I don’t know what the answer is - this guy is a savant on offense but he’s hopeless on defense.

Can you explain to me why the defense is better with Sengun on the floor? So far this season we have allowed fewer points per possession with Sengun on the court (110.4), compared to when he is on the bench (113.9). How can this be possible if he's so hopeless on defense?

Sengün is not the name of the Coach who has played a bigger role here.

Post this video of coach critiquing Udoka and the Rockets.

Most can be seen as "Easiest thing to do is Criticize"

With experience most of this can be fixed....except what he says about Sengun Drop
Coverage. We'll never win a championship with Sengun and his drop coverage.

Only hope is that the Sengun money doesn't ever prevent use from bringing in talent
to make an awesome Death Lineup....so we can sit him in times of need ( playoffs )

He doesn't have the physical tools to dominate on the defensive end like Deke or David Robinson or Hakeem.

I think some people are frustrated with that deviation from the idealized center and that frustration turns into exageration and hyperbole.

He's never going to win DPOY and lead the league in blocks. That doesn't mean he's bad at defense. I think people who go with "bad at defense" really mean he doesn't fit their ideal image of the shotblocking defensive anchor at the center position and they aren't going to be happy until they get one of those.

Yeah we should go snag Bruno and Bamba and run some pure guard-ball pick and roll! We’ll be bathing in championships!

The guy that made this video is overly critical as it’s not always on the coach. Players make individual decisions on the court. That has nothing to do with coaching. Take that Brooks transition D. His man was Wiggins so he ran to cover Wiggins but Smith was already there. Seems to be miscommunication. But one thing I agree with is Rockets can’t sit back and drop on screen and rolls. They need to either trap the ball handler or hedge/show and recover. Warriors were killing the Rockets on simple high screen and rolls or screen up top for 3.

He's not bad at defense but he's undersized for a five and not athletic. Jokic is similar but he's a lot bigger in size and can play more physical and even then Jokic isn't a good defender. Most great teams have a great shot blocking C or a switching five.

    Celtics - Horford
    Cavs- Jarrett Allen
    Sixers - Embiid
    Miami- Bam
    OKC- Chet
    Minny - Gobert
    Dallas - Lively

You got teams like Denver and Phoenix who defy that but even then they have bigs like Nurkic and Jokic who are just big. Sengun is relatively small for a C, as far as size and can't combat that with his athleticism.

Wow he played 8 minutes yesterday in the first half, pretty sure the rest of guys got us down by 30... we were no better with or without him on defense and our offense was completely hopeless..

Sengun didn't play in the overtime and yet they can't stop the Warriors. The whole defensive scheme is flaw. It's just easier to point at Sengun.

Defensive metrics are so flawed - even morey said as much.

Udoka knows Sengun struggles on defense, it’s no secret.

What are you suggesting by tagging clutch?

That my 2012 account should be banned for making a thread about sengun’s defense?

I believe just as some fans love to judge Green they apply the same bias here to Sengun. It’s not all his fault when the defense fails. Sometimes the help defense doesn’t close up driving lanes or leave a guy in the paint etc.

That said Sengun is slower laterally than some bigs in this league like Myles Turner, Capella, or even Hartenstein, that can cover perimeter guys or switch. His lack of vertical and length makes it more difficult for him to break up lobs or recover for a block when someone drives by him. He also tends drift from his man when he gets switched up and he gets too concerned with what’s going on in the middle instead of just guarding his guy. But 1-3’s beat him off the dribble usually. These are his limitations. He has improved in going after players driving in the paint and a willingness to move his feet. But these are some reasons why we lack defense after a high screen or DHO.
