Both parties historically have claimed moral superiority. With Republicans, it tends to be family values and personal virtue and patriotism. With Democrats, it's mostly about caring about the less fortunate or those who have been historically discriminated against. Trump has shamed Republicans into abandoning moral principles (listen to them in 2015 and then how their views on Trump shifted in 2016/2017) and acting like they just don't matter anymore because of a silly myth that everyone is equally bad.
