Getting coached hard is one thing. Tell a player what he is doing wrong, then give him a chance to do it better.

    Not in that game.

    Hopefully in the next one.

Yeah I just don't really care what he wants. I think this is a fine way to treat rookies, or even 2nd year players. But if an organization has valued a player at $35+ million a year, that shouldn't be a guy that needs to be benched. Either you believe in him or you don't. Figure out a way to get him to contribute and put his ass in the game. I don't care if it's kid gloves, coddling him, being nice to him, screaming in his face, being mean to him, tell him he sucks, whatever. Do whatever you want on the sidelines, but figure out a way to get him in the game and get him to contribute.

To say it another way, $35mil players should not need to be benched. It's a failure of the front office. If you think a player is bad enough, or inconsistent enough, that the best way to win is to sit their ass down for an entire half, then that player is not worth $35 million to the team. So pick one.

That's not how sports works. You don't get molly coddled just because you're a star player. Thankfully Ime's man enough to at least hold players accountable rather than letting them get away with crappy play just because they got a contract extension.

Look, I said it once and I'll say it for you again. If he sucks so bad that he needs to be benched, then they shouldn't have paid him at all. This isn't about coddling. You either believe that he's a star or you don't. If he's a star, and he's worth $35 million dollars, then the best way to win is to put him in the game. If the best way to win the game is with him on the bench, they never should have paid him that contract.

He had a truly bad game because a generational talent was guarding him but you can't bench your best player, treat him like a scrub under no circumstances. You just extended with him. Even if he is having a bad game he has to play to learn to make adjustments. Hoping that Ime will realize that he can't treat him like any other player on the roster anymore.

And I'll tell you again, you're wrong, that's not how sports work. A lot higher paid players in sports where a LOT more money is involved get benched all the time. Sometimes people don't put the effort in or play below their level, you don't just ignore it, you correct it. It's literally what a coach is supposed to do. It's like y'all are brand new to the idea of sports and accountability or something.

even if we had bruno, i don't even think fvv knows how to throw alley oops. Man is only good at keeping the ball safe and passing it to open shooters. He does nothing to elevate sengun's game or give him easy looks

Do they get benched all the time? Maybe I'm just wrong here but I'm not aware of it. Can you give me examples? I know that's a tough ask because you probably don't have random games memorized, but I'm not aware of any team that benches their highest paid player multiple times per year. Not with any regularity. The only example I can think of in the last decade was Harden getting benched in the clippers game 6 comeback. But I'm not aware of any team that benches their highest paid player with any regularity. Like I've never seen Dallas decide "we are losing here, I think the best way to come back in this game is if we put Luka on the bench." Or Lebron, or Embiid, or whoever you want to sub in here.

I mean it's what we (and some of the players for that matter) asked for after the Silas years. A coach that holds players accountable. I know it's not pleasant seeing a player you like benched and called out by the coach, but if I'm right about the type of player and person Alpi is, then I'm sure he's not sulking somewhere. I'm pretty sure he's looking to bounce back and have a monster game.

He has skills and talent so whatever is going on I'm confident he'll get back on track. Getting him and Jalen going consistently should be this team's top priority.

Benched all the time? That’s pushing it. I’ve seen Derozan get benched in the playoffs a couple of times. Gobert gets benched a lot. It happens. It’s not as rare as you think and when it does happen, there’s usually a reason for that

Must be an American thing, this molly coddling thing then? Happens all the time in the biggest sport in the world, like to the point where this attitude you're portraying would have most soccer/football fans laughing at how babyish it is, straight up. My dad never told me Americans were soft though (he's a proud Texan, the reason I'm a Rockets fan) he gave me this impression of tough-nosed grit and grind football players, guess it's more about "no poor baby, you played **** but do whatever you want because we paid you a little bit of money?" Is that what you're telling me? I'll ask me Dad if he agrees with that at Sunday Dinner later, he certainly didn't raise me that way. Thankfully Alpi's not a p***y, so he's happy to be coached like an actual competitive sports MAN.

Actually, this happens quite frequently with big men. Karl Anthony Towns got benched numerous time last season despite the Wolves being 3rd seed. In fact, he got benched when he had a 62 point game.

More "traditional" big men that like to operate in the middle are much more prone to benching. The reason is on offense, they clog the lane, and on defense they can get exploited at the perimeter in various ways due to their lack of foot speed.

No dude. That is not what I'm telling you, not at all. I feel like you are intentionally missing my point. There is no coddling involved with what I am suggesting. I'll try to say it in a different way here.

Imagine you are the Dallas mavericks coach, and Luka has a poor first half. You're down by 15 and you're thinking about the strategy for the second half, and how to come back. What's your best move? What gives you the best chance of winning in this spot. Is it benching Luka? Do you think you're actually better off, and have a higher chance of winning, if you put Luka on the bench and try to win the game without him? Or are you going to give yourself the highest chance to win by continuing to play Luka, because you know he's a great player, and you know he's mentally tough, and you know that the best way to win this game is for Luka to turn it around, bounce back, and have a great second half?

When you evaluate a player and decide how much to pay him, you should not pay him $150mil if the answer to the above hypothetical is to bench that player. That is what I believe. If you actually think the best way to win is to sit him on the bench and play your backups, because you don't trust in his ability to turn it around, then your front office has made a mistake. It's got nothing to do with coddling the players. The player's feelings are irrelevant, it has nothing to do with trying to protect the player. It has everything to do with player evaluation and contract.

Yeah, our pick and roll in general leaves a lot to be desired.

Part of what makes Harden pnr roll so deadly is that he actually puts pressure on the defense to keep him from scoring.

Seems like our guys run the pnr with the sole purpose of making a pocket pass to Sengun.

Pnr should open up a lot of things including corner threes but we dont generate enough of those either.

Another aspect of benching, it wears off like antibiotics.......there will be time when bacteria cultures will renew themselves and be resistant to it.

This one trick pony would not cut it.

Yeah, and they traded him! That's what I'm trying to say here! My point is that if you need to bench players constantly, you don't want that player on your team. Towns is a great example of my point, you are agreeing with me. That's why Minnesota traded him.

Actually, they traded him primarily due to the 2nd apron issue.

Essentially, due to how punitive the 2nd apron is, the Wolves had no choice but to trade KAT.

If the Wolves had no salary issues, they clearly wouldn't have traded him.

Alperen had a pretty bad game. Whether he gets benched or not is a coaching style and I don’t think it makes a major difference in the long run. What matters is the frequency of these bad games rather than how the coach reacts to it.

our offensive problems are deeper than Sengun playing bad though. This may not have been clear up to this point because of the youth of players and we focused more on player development and performances. Now Green is better, Alpi is stronger, can take 3s but I don’t see a good offensive system. Alpi has become a more one dimensional player, completely lost his ‘fancy’ passing and worse on standard passing as well. Jabari and Brooks are tasked with some random possessions. We almost never get anything from good ball movement and it is so frustrating to watch players stand in place in offense. It looks better with tari and amen than bari and brooks because they naturally move but this doesn’t come with any structure.

regardless of whether Sengun is the right player to go forward , it becomes more apparent to me that İme is not good enough for the next level, unless you have a Luka, harden type making all decisions guard. The guard is the coach on offense and ime runs the defense.

You’re wrong. Sengun is not getting paid star money. He’s got a contract that’s 19% of the cap.

Closest players to 19% of the cap this year: Nic Claxton, Miles Bridges, John Collins, Andrew Wiggins.

You’re talking like we committed a designated extension or supermax to Sengun and he calls the shots and can never sit in crunch time. Get a grip.

Sure, but they still could've kept him. The salary issues forced them to evaluate the roster and determine which player to get rid of. But they determined it was KAT.
