I hate the Dodgers, but still prefer them to win. Besides the points above, the fact that they spent a billion dollars this offseason will get notice of even casual fans. They simply bought the championship … they won’t get the type of organizational credit they want, and the contrast to the Astros will be even more stark.
I saw the Freeman Grand slam at a bar where a friends band was playing. I’ll admit that was pretty impressive and historic. Still not going to go out of my way to watch any of the other games.
But at least he's moved on unlike Kershaw, Roberts, Cashman and so on. I’ve already played a playoff series here since then,” said Hernandez, who went 10 for 26 with three home runs for the Boston Red Sox when they lost the 2021 American League Championship Series against the Astros in six games. “I don’t give a (expletive) about that anymore. That was seven years ago. I played for one of the guys (Red Sox manager Alex Cora). I played with guys that were on that team. I don’t care. “It’s (expletive) over.”
That was a fun game. I only caught the scoring innings for the most part. I thought it was nuts to put that NY relief pitcher in when he hadn't pitched in a game in a month. It didn't work out obviously. But, he did get Ohtani to pop foul out on a good defensive play. But, that first pitch was just crushed for the Grand Slam by the left-handed hitter. Epic ending. I think Alvarez would have crushed that pitch as well. I like these two teams in the World Series even if I don't care for either team when we play them or otherwise. I hope the rest of the games are as good. Should have known NY was headed to the World Series when they rather harshly swept the Astros at the beginning of the season. I haven't been following the Yanks much at all this past season beyond their record but I'm assuming primarily that Soto just really propelled the club into the upper echelon...something we hoped Abreu would do when we got him. That HR definitely made my mind flash back to seeing the Kirk Gibson 1988 WS game 1 homerun. In that game, the Dodgers were down a run to the As in the 9th and left-handed hitter Gibson hit the HR off of rightie pitcher Dennis Eckersley.
Boone had the same stupid look Servais had a couple of years ago. But to be fair, I would/ probably have the same look Astros lose a heart breaker.
Astros do not have a rivalry with Yankees. It's not a rivalry until both teams have won a playoff series against the other.
This is about where I'm at. It's not every Yankee fan (just like it's not every Red Sox fan), but there's enough entitlement and bad attitude among many of them, including ESPN and national sports press, that makes that side wholly unsympathetic. Stepping back from my bias... that was a pretty cool WS game.
Wasn't Gibson hurt when he hit the hr? Apparently Freeman isn't 100% as well. As for the Yankees, during mid season they went on a major slump. Looked like they were going collapse(think Astros even got to 4 or 5 games back). Yes Soto was a key factor but Torres started to hit down the stretch and a co worker who's a Yankees fan said Wells was hitting as well.
I actually tolerate the hard core Yankee fans. They can be obnoxious but if you actually grew up in NY and are a die hard fan of the home team I can understand it. What bugs me is the people who are Yankees or Dodgers fans just because of marketing. For example it’s someone who lives in Minnetonka (a suburb of Minneapolis) but wears a Yankee cap to a game at Target field between the Twins and the White Sox and this Season bought a Dodgers Ohtani Jersey. In Hong Kong and other major cities in Asia there are MLB shops that are sponsored by the MLB. I went to one in Hong Kong last year and it was mostly Yankees, Dodgers and a few Cubs and Braves gear. Not a single piece of Stros gear even though the Stros have been the most consistently winning team the last 9 years. True fandom based on personal connection I can appreciate. It’s the fandom that’s just because of marketing I don’t respect.
Crazy, I just assumed he got hurt during the series or game lol. Didn't know it was his only AB. Did they not have roster limits back then? Quite the call to have him in the lineup/roster if he was that hurt.
Only caught the highlights at a bar but wish there was a way both teams could lose. Screw the Yankees and their insufferable fans, the worst of the worst. The Astros have no one to blame but themselves. Get it together Astros - playoff baseball ain’t the same without them.
I’m waiting for the Yankees to claim that Freeman was wearing a wire under his shirt to tip him about the pitches.
[late eta to earlier post] This is a great read: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24974235/mlb-kirk-gibson-world-series-home-run-30-years-later
Braves and Cubs got lucky by having their regional sports networks be nationwide channels in TBS and WGN during the hey day of cable. HSE was Houston specific sadly. If Bezos was a couple decades earlier with Amazon streaming services... if the Sonics, Seahawks, and Mariners would have a much broader fan base
