Love Udoka, but not one play called since summer league for a Sheppard three. Think Rockets maybe just got Reed for his “short man” defense. Said it over and over again that they should have taken Edey!!! No issues with Sheppard, but what a waste of a pick if no plays are designed for multiple threes throughout the game. Seriously, not one play the whole preseason for a three. Makes you wonder about the offensive coaching of this team.
Makes me think College 3s are really that effortless to pull off. Jabari was touted as the next big shooter.
Ime Udoka has gone Full Jeff Van Gundy. Very Maddening. Vassillis Spanoulis the better player over Rafer Alston inconsistent 3 point shooter. Vassillis Spanoulis whenever he played he was Uptempo, High Energy when he played.
Rookies are going to rookie. I’m surprised Ime is giving Sheppard so much run this early. Ime’s rotations are what cost us this game. If we aren’t hitting 3’s go full kaos with Amen and Tari and even Tate if necessary.
The problem is it’s the NBA where there are no wide open shots unless you have an effective offensive system or you have a star player who you can run your offense through to command double teams and then get open shots for guys who can shoot. So yeah I think Reed was an odd pick imo given that we don’t have a Rick Adelman type of coach offensively and we don’t yet have a superstar Reed can benefit from. I’ve always said I see a modern day Steve Kerr type of point guard here which is great but I don’t think the Rockets are able to maximize the value of a Kerr type of PG right now so they should just swing for the fences with better athletes with higher ceilings. Reed is small guys. I hate to break it to you. If you can’t see it I’m sorry to offend you but the guy is too small in the nba to dominate on his own. He can only be effective at his size if he develops that once in a generation handle that CP3 or Nash had or if he’s on a team that has superstars where he can hit open shots. I’ll be happy to be wrong if his handle and playmaking is generational like CP3 and I’m just not seeing it but the fact is the guy is just too small to be effective on his own.
Give him 3 years but you got a point there. I think fans just got overwhelmed because the 3rd pick fell to our lap.
That’s just the thing. He’s the 3rd pick in the draft. You don’t have that kind of time. Look at what we just had to pay Jalen and Şengün. The Rockets still need a star player for all of these players to maximize their potential as supporting players. You don’t have a ton of time to reap the benefits of players on their rookie contracts. I would have rather used that time with a rookie to swing for the fences a bit more knowing that we don’t have a superstar. But that’s water under the bridge now. We took Reed so let’s just hope they Ime improves the offense more because last night what he put out there was dog sh$t you’d expect to see in the first preseason game. This team looks totally unprepared for the season, and that kind of team wide lack of offensive anything is going to really neuter the abilities of these young role players.
I understand but it is not his fault the organization never identified a surefire superstar and their coaches have been Silas, an inept assistant and now Udoka who has a problem with Offense. You could only call it unfortunate Timing. Stone has done well on paper but in reality all the pieces are not really meshing that well.
Reed is playing timid as expected from a young player in this situation trying to fit in. He's taking those bunnies that are given to him, but thats all by design. Teams would rather he just take a mid range shot instead of killing them with the 3 ball. Its up to his teammates to have some awareness and up to Ime if he's going to use that player with intent by running plays specifically for his skill. Reed and Adams will probably have great synergy with the 2nd unit once he's 100% and a consistent part of the rotation.
That’s the problem….disagree with others who say Reed is overhyped on threes. He’s a legit bomber who can hit 40% threes in the NBA. He’s often wide open when guys like Sengun start making his move, but there is no coaching to tell him to occasionally pass it out to the open three when he’s triple teamed….he only passes to cutters to the basket. This team lost because they are all one on one players right now with no concept of passing the ball around the horn to the open shooters.
I don't know if Reed was advertised as a guy hitting 3's on the move..... But I'm glad he has a 42 inch vertical. Hate to see him trying to shoot 3's with a 34 inch vertical. He would have even less attempts.
It is true that the opposing teams have been sticking to Reed, but he hasn't yet shown the spatial awareness to create an open three out of nothing. He goes around the screen and he could have an open three, but he doesn't do the little extra to create space with a side step or back step. I think he will learn it, but right now he is missing that part - he will just be a role player until he learns to create space out of nothing.
Does Reed? he’s the king of playing timid and not looking for his shot…he has low usage role player mentality when he’s a 3rd overall pick
