My hat is off to Stone, Eli Witus, the front office, ownership - and to Alpi for taking a discount

He already took off his hat. He has no more hats to remove from his head.

As much as I am optimistic about the Rockets future, this "faster and better than everyone expected/thought/was possible" feels really weird thing for people to say. Basically the Rockets rebuild is going from 50+ win team -> .500 team in 3 years. The last time the Rockets rebuilt after Yao/T-Mac went down, they returned to the playoffs with James Harden in 3 years. The time before that when the Rockets rebuilt after the Pippen debacle, they had Yao/Francis/Mobley after 3 years. If you asked Rockets fans back in 2012 or 2003 whether they'd trade their roster for this current Rockets roster, I bet you they'd rather keep theirs.

Who said it was a discount? Again what’s his market value? Just because you think he’s worth a certain amount doesn’t mean there’s a market for him. And players make decisions that are known to them which varies including a chance to secure money for themselves and their families, taxes, and a market that can boost their commercial appeal. We don’t fully know why he took the deal given the limited information including market demand so to say he took a discount isn’t necessarily accurate or true.

So its your opinion and not necessarily facts since no media outlet has specifically reported that Sengun’s market value is the max.

Nobody is going to be able to prove to you that his value on the open market would be max money, but it seems fairly obvious that it would based on the deals given to other players from his rookie class. Thing is, he can't get that max contract until he plays out another full season unless the Rockets choose to offer it to him, which they did not. Coming off a pretty scary injury which could have been a lot worse, he chose to take moderately less money in exchange for guaranteeing himself to be set for life. Understandable, but still a good deal for the Rockets provided he does stay healthy.

His market value is the max. The market would have been next year. Now you know. Although you likely don't understand.

Where did you get that info from? For any market there has to be buyers. Value is derived from demand of buyers. Who was willing to pay for Sengun? Or did you completely make up this information?

he is the most maxable player on the Rockets by a mile and his draft class who has 3 max players just be happy Rockets got a steal and locked him up and Sengun loves the team and city and wants to stay as long as possible regardless of the money. That's rare these days.

Hollinger: Let’s start with the low hanging fruit: Şengün’s deal is a home run. A possible All-Star as soon as this season, he has the highest career PER of any player from that 2021 draft but is on Houston’s books for about $8 million less than the Pistons will pay Cade Cunningham. The Rockets gave up a fifth-year player option in this structure, likely losing some upside on that year if there’s another extension in a few years. However, having a player of his caliber signed for an estimated $31 million next season is a massive win.

Sam: Let’s start with the good news: Extending Alperen Şengün for five years, $185 million is an undeniable victory for the Rockets organization — even if it does have a player option in the fifth year. Şengün has proved himself to be the steal of the 2021 draft, a creative big man selected outside of the lottery with serious skill. He has, to this point, been inarguably the most productive offensive player from the class. With all due respect to Scottie Barnes, Franz Wagner and other top selections, Şengün’s 21-point, nine-rebound, five-assist campaign last year is the best season in terms of offensive production that any player has achieved within that class.

I think I get where the other poster is coming from. For this contract, since other teams could not dictate value, the question is totally hypothetical. We can guess based on what other players are getting recently but that's about it.

that's not a guess thats called comps

how else can you determine it?

experts already said he's the best in his class/most deserving of a max

You really think Jalen took a discount? What do you think Jalen is worth?

There wasn't any market this year, because only the Rockets could offer him a contract. That should be obvious, but I don't know if it is to that poster. Next year, he would have commanded the max, barring a catastrophic injury.

You can't 100% determine it without market competition. That was the point.

A comparison is an educated guess. Just like when the experts rank draft prospects. Their educated guesses are taken as gospel and people lose their minds when the facts don't bear out.

Honestly I think this is all sematics. IMO the team got danm good deals on both contracts and both players got paid.

While I agree that's VERY likely, it's still a projection.

I know it's splitting hairs but coming from someone who has to deal in absolutes in my profession I can understand nit picking the specifics. OCD is a b**** :D
