It's not whataboutism if the two are causally linked, which they are. If you have two kids who are yelling obscenities at each other and you only reprimand one of them, it's not whataboutism for someone to point out that they are both doing it.

Wow. I hope you are not a parent.

You are perfectly capable of separating Billy's role in the incident, analyzing it and reprimanding it and the child will be the one to say "but Suzy."

    What a freaking horrible analogy.

We are not playing the role of parent here. Parenting involves teaching personal responsibility to each child, sometimes individually.

We are discussing the source of divisions in our society. And if you’re trying to analyze the origin of these kids acting the way they are and are focusing on one to the exclusion of the other, you’re doing it wrong.

IMO when trump came on the scene, he slowly allowed it and then kicked into gear when he went into office. He allowed the maga and Q types come out from behind the curtain and let them know that its ok to let your freak flag fly, they were there the whole time, just hiding in plain sight. Now, I do think the rhetoric gets out of control especially around elections, but to say it's the left's fault for all of that is disingenuous. I dont quite understand the "burn the house down" rhetoric, but OK. We all have things we probably agree on more than we realize, I want a strong border, but I want our Congress to do it so it's a LAW, trump shot that down. I want kids to be safe in school, I don't want boys playing girls sports, I want everyone to own a gun if they want but I want stricter laws on who is getting them and I think you should be 21.

If your being honest with yourself, people like trump, MTG, Gaetz, Jordan and the fine folks like kerri lake, Candice O are all EXTREME and spout absurd rhetoric that they can never prove...............we still hear VOTER FRAUD yet it could not be proven in court, you got the like of MTG spouting Jewish Lazers and the Gov can guide hurricanes.

To me, if you would have had someone normal and moderate like Haley or Christie, the gop would have this in the bag and as an Independant I was ready to listen, but when the gop puts the same bombastic candidate, I will vote simply for the other side because I care about this Country over a Party.

As @durvasa points out, its not really a whataboutism if you're talking about the dynamic. I'm not saying that crying racist is not any worse than being a racist. I'm saying well-grounded accusations of racism against actual racism isn't bad at all.

Now, I will agree (if you say it) that some hotheaded liberals will paint with a broad brush and accuse all Trump voters of racist intent. Sure, that doesn't help. But, if accusations of racism have increased recently (I don't know how you measure that), it might be because there has been a lot more provocation recently from a president who was constantly saying and doing racist stuff without losing the support of his constituency. Maybe not all Trump supporters are racists, but the tenor of the Republican Party on the whole has become more racist under Trump's leadership. If for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction (figuratively), the pitch of antiracism will increase along with the racism.

And yeah, the conflict between racists and antiracists gets ugly. Does that mean antiracists should stand down and let racism prevail? No. Liberals should maybe be more sanguine and more careful about how they sling racism accusations around. And Trump should be more careful about slinging dehumanizing rhetoric about immigrants and minorities. And maybe Trump supporters should show a little more backbone and say "What Trump did was wrong" sometimes. I don't mean that as a whataboutism. I'm saying everyone needs to act better if you want to reduce the toxicity.

The increasingly nasty and divisive rhetoric from the left well predates Trump. He may in part be a product of that collapse in cordiality.

Democrats and Republicans could disagree and be cordial/civil/live in community pretty well in the 1990s.

Over the years it became increasingly nazi/racist/homophobe from the left directed towards the right.

The right doesn't have that same level of mudslinging rhetoric. Not even close.

The collective left decided that rhetoric should be used and they burned the thing to the ground.

Now we live in an impossibly polarized country in 2024 and it's very much a by product of that rhetoric being used for 25 years.

    Says you. I disagree.

We're perfectly capable of examining one sides role in how we got to where we are concerning the national discourse.

If it was the other way around and we only wanted to discuss the rights role you'd be happy as a pig in slop.

    Spare me.

It’s ridiculous that so many people are still defending calling Trump supporters white trash

if you try and understand them, it may help in solving differences, understanding one another and having them vote for a different candidate

If they are independent of each other, yes. When two sides are reacting to each other, ignoring that dynamic is not a particularly illuminating examination of that discourse.

I wouldn't get defensive if someone pointed out that rhetoric on the left also contributes to the division, because I happen to believe that is true.

Not in the same universe as charged as racist/nazi/homophobe in 21st century America.

    Outside of some specific communities.

Being called a communist is equivalent to being called an enemy of the state. We had a whole Cold War to stop the spread of communism.

They are part idiots, part gullible, and part victim to a changing world, poor prospects for economic success, and Trump manipulation. In short, it is not entirely their fault, but at some point, people have to take individual responsibility for their views and actions.
