This ^ Cade/Franz/Evan/Scottie's... theirs avg around $44m and it's five years instead of 3. 35m per is still a lot and security for Green.
I wonder if the security of his contract for the next couple of years is either going to either make him more confident and remove all nervous jitters like having the thought of a season ending injury derailing the value of his next contract or make him more complacent. For many players having that burden removed often makes them better because they play with more confidence and security in their role. But it also makes some players more complacent and ease off on the grind.
He's talking immediate money. The contract Jalen signed pays him less next year than his cap hold this off-season would have been, meaning we saved around $5 million (though I thought it was closer to $4m with the numbers I'm seeing but point remains) in cap space for next off-season
I'm happy with it. I don't ever like player options, but it's best to lock these guys up rather than risk losing them.
Obviously it's good for us in all contract scenarios if Jalen is good, and bad for us if Jalen is bad. But if he's good and outplays his contract you want him to still be on the artificially constrained rookie extension and tied to the Rockets until 2031, not hitting unrestricted free agency at age 25. Those years are where the upside of the long rookie extension typically come from. Basically we're both limiting downside and limiting upside by doing 3 years instead of 5. But then making the 3rd a PO further limits the upside without further limiting the downside.
I love that we went round and round on Jalen and we both end up thinking this. I choose to believe he leans in and kills it. Remember, of course, I was literally voted Most Optimistic my senior year of high school, but still!! It’s Go Rockets regardless!! Can’t wait for the season to start!
If he signed a max deal next year it would be more than 5M saved as the max would have increased by 10%. For example if Rox dont sign Sengun to a max deal now and wait till next year they'd pay him more than 35M so thats what the Rockets saved.
Green signs a deal that is fair to all parties. Even though Green could have held out for the super max for rookies, he left an out, where he could eventually exceed the money he leaves on the table in this deal.
I am shocked at the way this is being received, this is the total opposite of what I would have expected. Anyway, I think this is a great deal, and I'm kind of surprised Jalen signed it. But this is a really good deal for the rockets.
Remember, the Rockets can pre-empt Jalen's opt out a year early by extending him in 2026 (if he agrees to it). I've been a huge critic but Stone deserves props this time.
The max doesn't change if an extension is signed now vs next year. Extensions are based on the year the contract starts, which will be 2025 in both cases.
So umm when can he be traded? If anything, that makes him more tradable, no? I would hope for him to break out and outperform the contract, but if not, I think this gives us an out. Good contract.
Green is banking on himself while giving us some flexibility. Team player all the way. I'm not sure what Sengun is doing but I don't believe he's a max player, a good player, but not max. The only players this summer I think is worth max is Scotty Barnes and that's iffy.
