Interesting advanced analysis here... TL;DR, the Texans are 30th in overall offensive line win rate, CJ covering up a LOT of warts with this line... Kind of disappointing with how much capital has been invested in this line, is it coaching or is it just we need to cut bait and rebuild it?
Every site's stats have different numbers and rankings, but a quick look says espn's numbers say Tunsil is 10th among NFL OT. His pass blocking has not been anywhere close to a problem. Texans have no interior lineman in the top 20. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41040723/2024-nfl-win-rates-top-teams-players-rankings
Makes you think our IOL especially at OG are really, really bad. Green might be the worst starting guard in the NFL.
...and I actually has some high hopes for Green (cause he's healthy?) coming into this season. He was drafted because he could be a run-blocking stud who could do well in pass protection. Suggs seems to be a player, so there's that.
So, we couldn't run block last year but were excellent at pass protection. To even that up we decided to do neither well this year it appears...
I'd wager it's our guards being traffic cones, but i'm just some dumb idiot doing my best to interpret data.
I mean, I don't have the tape available, just going off of what advanced stats I can find. Like that ESPN article you originally posted shows Tunsil up in the top echelon of tackles in pass protection, but the Texans don't have a guard in the top 20 in pass blocking nor the top 10 in run blocking, speaking of run blocking, the Texans don't have a tackle in the top 10 (according to ESPN) in that area either. It seems that the entire line is mediocre to average outside of Tunsil.
Honestly seems like it. Just what I can see watching the games. I'm sure there's stats out there that'll prove it true...let the nerds find it.
I'm so fcking tired of Howard. He is just a terrible player, is there a veteran out there that the Texans can plug in? Whoever it may be, he will not be any worst than Howard.
Tunsil's presnap penalties are no longer a thing. He's back to being who he is. Scruggs has been one of the better centers. That's 2. Start Fisher and give Patterson a shot at LG. It won't be worse.
I'm not sure that it's a talent issue more than a scheme and communication issue. The inability to pick up and block basic stunts is befuddling.
We can't handle rudimentary DLine games, it's embarrassing. That fired Colts OL coach might need to go because I'm seeing mental mistakes at each OL position. That screams classroom, preparation, issues not physical talent.
I'm thinking the same way. which is why I can't believe everyone on the depth chart is terrible with the mental part. And if they are all bad at it then there it's foundation problem with how they're being taught to pick up the stunts. Going to need some James Olmos Stand and Deliver to teach the basics.
