As much as I like Sheppard, it's way too early to pencil him in for that kind of 3 point volume or accuracy.
The only thing that might make Reed less effective on defense is his build. Fred is like a fire hydrant with low center of gravity. He can stand his ground against larger opponent. Reed is more slim and might get bullied by bigger guys. That said, he is bigger than Fred and with some training might be able to get better. On offense, once he learns the NBA ropes, he'll exceed FVV's level.
Fred is a decent and nice guy but yeah we will see. I still think Sheppard is a much different player than Fred.......Fred was much more of a shooting guard off the pine, a 6th man in his younger years. The Transformation of Fred becoming a full time starting PG has been nothing but remarkable.
I have a better question. Why is Alex Sarr shooting better from 3 than our golden child, king sniper guy Reed? Why in tf would a professional basketball coach remove a known contributor to the team and replace them with someone who is not ready to contribute. Reed needs to prove that he can get his 3 off against competition higher than high school and college. Every other top draft pick this year has. Reed Sheppard has not. But don't you worry your pretty little head about. You just keep hugging nuts.
Alex Sarr in 3 games: 7 three pointers made/ 58% (already showing improvement) Reed Sheppard in 3 games: 2 three pointers made/ 40% (showing regression)
I actually would take it a step further and say he's kinda....good. He doesn't constantly go under on screens and doesn't mind making the defender feel him. Add that to his knack for generating steals and rip-blocks and you have a plus-ish defender. He already seems to have cut out the "let the defender run by me to see if I can poke it away from behind" thing he was doing at first. He basically stole it from Ingram last game for a breakaway dunk.
I've noticed he's staying in front more consistently on point of attack defense as well. It makes me think it was more an issue with his approach than an athletic limitation.
lol sarr is a ~60% 3 pt shooter!?! We should have traded up lol. Small sample size doesn’t mean much of anything. Reed is getting used to the nba and doesn’t look out of place. I’m sure he will have rookie struggles from time to time. But come on he’s taking 3s and getting them off they just no going in. If he was getting 2-3 shots blocked from deep a game I could see the concern.
It was never an athletic limitation. Hes a good NBA level athlete. Just not overly long. I think he has a tendency to bait people, which will end up biting him in the butt at some point
3 point percentage by position last season. https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/nba-league-average-3-point-percentage-by-position-in-2024 Point Guard - 37.2 Shooting Guard - 37.1 Small Forward - 36.2 Power Forward - 35.7 Center - 35.1 That puts him 6 tenths above average for the position at 36.3. He improved 5.6% from year 1 (.307) to year 2. That's a pretty sizable jump ..... I'm not concerned "Yet".
Someone is desperately hoping to see our guy fail so that he can prop up another player on another team he wanted to draft.
You should be concerned now because this is just preseason. What do you think will happen when the season starts and he is still shooting a subpar 29% 3 pointer? Because the defense really turns up during the season.
I'm not hoping for anything. We thought we were drafting a 3 point sniper but so far all we got was a regular ol run of the mill rotation player. Nothing else stands out about Sheppard without the 3 pointer.
What's even more remarkable is I remember Fred at Wichita State. He was not a great player in college. I specifically remember him flaming out in some of their NCAA tournament games. It did not point to him excelling at the next level.
I’m assuming that you don’t really watch basketball, which is fine. However, don’t think for a second that anything you’ve been posting has anyone believing you are knowledgeable or even a fan. Cheers.
I'm low key a little concerned about it, but I think we should give it a few games before we draw conclusions. His body of work at Kentucky is much larger. I do feel like there is an adjustment period.
If he is 29% on 3s and making every middy and runner and playing good defense and making good reads running the offense, then no I won’t be worried. If he is there at the end of the season I may be a bit worried but he isn’t the type that is over aggressive shooting and I think he’s trying to do that and missing more but he will adjust. It is the preseason. His release is quick. He is not perfect but I don’t see this as a problem now.
