and there is also a bit about data sharing and the PAC experiment that essentially outsources voter contact

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/11/us/politics/elon-musk-donald-trump-pennsylvania.html

The relationship has proved significant in other ways. After a reporter’s publication of hacked Trump campaign information last month, the campaign connected with X to prevent the circulation of links to the material on the platform, according to two people with knowledge of the events. X eventually blocked links to the material and suspended the reporter’s account.

Since publicly endorsing the former president in July, he has posted at least 109 times about Mr. Trump and the election. And while he has said in the past that the platform should be “politically neutral,” he has used it to advance election misinformation and the baseless claim that Democrats are engaging in “deliberate voter importation” and “fast-tracking” immigrants to citizenship to gain control over the electorate.

Online, Mr. Musk has painted a dark picture of what would happen if Mr. Trump lost, a circumstance that could hurt Mr. Musk personally. In an interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, he acknowledged “trashing Kamala nonstop” and being all in for Mr. Trump. If Mr. Trump loses, he joked, “how long do you think my prison sentence is going to be?”

The campaign signed a data-sharing agreement with America PAC and several others, and it works closely with them to assess which voters are most important to speak to at their homes. Still, some people in of Mr. Trump’s orbit are uncertain about how effective the outside efforts will be. Some donors to the super PAC have groused that Mr. Musk is relying on the same team that formed the core of Mr. DeSantis’s advisers when he attempted a similar effort in the Republican primaries, to no avail. Veterans of past campaigns argue that canvassing operations generally take months or even years to become effective machines. There is little precedent for successfully standing up a group of this scale just months before a presidential election. And turmoil has plagued America PAC at times, as Mr. Musk has repeatedly jettisoned advisers and vendors that were supplying canvassers and replaced them, at one point stranding hundreds of paid door-knockers across the country.

Yes, as opposed to the social media I share with you to educate you and help you see something outside your usual echo chamber, even though many of you cannot cope with that (you seem to at least not be one of those people).

Glad you are on record as believing the social media that you post. Because often when it is pointed out that it's completely made up, dishonest, and misleading, you try and hide from it and pretend that it isn't something that you actually believed.

I just want to say, it's absolutely hilarious that Musk's CyberTaxi launch (flop) - coming on the heels of him lighting hundreds of miillions of dollars on fire in service of MAGA, was rewarded with this gem from his leak-brained, senile, barely sentient buffoon of a candidate yesterday in one of his otherwise incoherent stump speeches in front of a half-empty auditorium:

    Another good investment.

He did this for the Houston area and Louisiana area when it was hit by hurricanes the last few years?

DeSantis sent state resources to Texas and Louisiana during these last hurricanes?

Hopefully this isn’t because there’s an election in less than a month.

@basso please see above - regarding Ro Khanna's argument that the Democrats should've effectively "bought off" Elon by ... Inviting him to parties (or something) - an argument that you repeatedly asked me to respond to yesterday, and which, as a beautiful gift, I did, to your apparent displeasure.

Does the fact that Trump went to Detroit and promised to ban all autonomous vehicles yesterday - literally, hours before Elon Musk re-re-re-re-re-launched his (poorly received by markets) bet-the-company investor demo in which he revealed that autonomous vehicles would be TSLA's primary source of future revenue (somehow)...

...open the door to Ro Khanna's purported hypothetical opportunity to reclaim Elon for the Democrats/Democracy? Like maybe promise to...not do that?

Or, alternatively, is Elon too much of a **** brained ketamine snorting gutter racist to realize that investing > $10 million in MAGA that is explicitly promising to outlaw his primary source of future wealth is maybe not the shrewdest move in the world?

Interested to hear your thoughts as usual

#1 - why would believe anything trump says (regarding banning self driving cars)

#2 - I'm sure Elon hears this , and interprets it like HE will be the only one allowed to make them

my thoughts are Elon is providing a vital service for people stranded by the storms. He's an American hero. For a politician, having someone like that in your corner is not a bad thing.

The $10M I'm sure is significant for the campaign. It's pocket change for Elon.

    It's pretty simple.

Trump has no loyalty to anyone except himself. He would use anyone. If Pelosi said Trump is great, she would instantly become the best human being who ever existed.

Powerful people, believing they have the intelligence, influence, money, and whatever logical reasons they think justify it, believe they can control Trump. Yeah, well, history might be something they want to revisit.

Musk's "free" Starlink offer in the wake of Hurricane Helene appears to be a thinly veiled marketing opportunity, capitalizing on disaster victims' desperation to expand Starlink's customer base.

Since this was reported, Musk has extended the "free" service another month.

Elon Musk's 'Free' Starlink Internet For Helene Victims Comes With $400 Catch | IBTimes

Elon Musk pledged he will make the internet available for free on his Starlink satellite service for victims of Hurricane Helene, but failed to note that would-be users will have to shell out $400 for hardware to support it.

Starlink, a division of Musk's SpaceX, announced last week that it will provide 30 days of "free" internet service, which usually goes for $120 a month, for the thousands of victims of Helene in the southeast lacking phone service or where flooding destroyed fiber cables.

"Starlink terminals will now work automatically without need for payment in the areas affected by Hurricane Helene," he said.

Online publication the Register put the offer through a test run and found that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

To see if you're eligible, you have to enter your address on the Starlink web page.

"But try to sign up for the ostensibly 'free' service in an area Starlink has designated as a Helene disaster zone, and surprise: You still have to pay for the terminal (normally $350, but reportedly discounted to $299 for disaster relief, though that's not reflected in Starlink's signup page), plus shipping and tax, bringing the grand total to just shy of $400," the outlet discovered.

The Register put in an address for city hall in Boone, N.C., one of the areas ravaged by the hurricane and it showed the cost of the hardware, shipping and handling, and taxes coming out to $393.91.

"Though better than nothing at all, it is not quite the humanitarian aid it was promoted and heralded as," the Register said.

And customers who were able to get the "free" service will automatically be moved into a $120 monthly subscription service.

An editor at the Register tried to sign up for the "free" service and ended up with a nearly $400 tab.

"Like everyone else using what little phone battery was left, I navigated with SOS bars and no connectivity to starlink.com/activate only to see that it wasn't actually free," Nicole Hemsoth Prickett.

"I could connect to an active webpage in the middle of nowhere, which really says hey, data connectivity could actually be working again, but not for you with Starlink unless you pony up. It was insult to injury for many here who thought Free Internet Space Magic was real," she said.

    Sales drive

Interestingly enough, as Baughman pointed out, the Helene Starlink offer seems pretty close to the 30-day trial the SpaceX subsidiary offers new residential customers. But there are differences. That 30-day trial offer allows users to return the hardware for a full refund after that period. The $120 service charge for the trial is not returned. The marketing around that has led some to believe, wrongly, it's 30 days of free service with the option to back out entirely, fully refunded, if unhappy with the connectivity.

The Helene offer, meanwhile, is 30 days of free service, provided one already has a dish or is willing to buy it knowing they'll be moved to a paid-for plan straight after.
