Sorry, we all live in the Houston area. This is just a family property that we go to 12ish weeks out of the year.
We do have some family/friends that live in the area, they all got out.

We had an insurance policy for certain things, this isn’t covered. The rates are too much to keep, we will just pay out of pocket for remodel. Depending on what the property managers have to say

Because it shows up after every hurricane. It's close to reaching "shark on the roadway" status.

It does seem plausible though, so I can't completely blame you for posting it. This brings out another problem with social media and disasters: we all need to have a critical eye about stuff we see and never repost something from a source that is not known and credible. When we do get fooled, own up to it and try to correct the record.

That's also what the Community Notes feature is for - I find it works pretty well - actually much better than when the mainstream media lies, and then covers it up. Which happens all the freaking time.

Delete the "and disasters" part and it's even more true.

Sharknado part 10. Coming to your TV soon. How will humanity survive as sharks with laser eyes blows towards them, while also having to hide from the dinosaurs and trying to fight off the little green men plotting to destroy the Earth?

We are 10 days into the federal government's new fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2024-September 30, 2025. Congress allocated $20 billion to FEMA for this fiscal year. Through these 10 days, FEMA is spending a little less than $1 billion per day, a number that will increase given Milton damages. That means half of their budget is already gone.

But that doesn't mean half is still available. FEMA must preserve some money to respond to something that may happen tomorrow or next week. There are wildfires burning in the Western US right now. Chunks of Southern Cal may go up in smoke when the Santa Ana winds kick in. You can get a Midwest flood in short order. There's always the possibility of an earthquake. And so on.

As of today, FEMA is responding to 18 ongoing major disasters across 14 states. If you include all the smaller wildland fires since July 1, it adds 8 more states and 38 separate fires for which FEMA support is still ongoing.

As things get tight, FEMA suspends funds aimed at long-term recovery, which includes funding for damaged public infrastructure like roads, sewer plants, and water treatment facilities. They move that money to the immediate response side so that life-saving and critical needs actions can be taken. This is paying the search and rescue team to travel across the country and go to work, the bottled water, the food, the temporary shelters, medical assistance, the helicopter time and fuel, etc. If they need to suspend the long-term funding, that means there's a delay in getting people and communities back on the road to recovery. Having to spend on a hurricane response can delay the repairs for the drinking water system in a small Wyoming town that suffered a wildfire in July.

So, yeah, maybe FEMA can handle the immediate needs of both hurricanes with their remaining funds, but there's going to be a squeeze somewhere. And it's not just FEMA.

USDA has disaster programs set up for farmers. I don't know what that funding looks like right now, but there are a lot of farms in the Southeast that got a lot of water dumped on their fields. There are others that had their fields washed away. Livestock was also lost. It would be good to make sure those programs are all set to go for today and what might be coming tomorrow.

Then there is the Small Business Administration. SBA is the quiet partner in disaster response, often spending more than FEMA. It's through SBA that small businesses can get the assistance they need to rebuild. The SBA gives low-interest loans to homeowners so they can rebuild. Low-interest loans are also available to renters so they can recover. It's a huge post-disaster operation.

I don't know what the current SBA budget looks like, but I'd guess it is under a similar strain as FEMA and probably USDA.

This is why we need disaster relief funding bills after major disasters. The baseline funding allocations set by Congress are almost always made on a rolling 10-year average. When you have a disaster or disasters that exceed that average, it can eat up the budget quickly, as we are seeing now.

Yeah, no need to even look this up. This dude obviously did time, had (probably has) some hard drug addictions, which are likely the root of all of his issues. Its sad and I hope he’s on the upswing.
