I'm pulling for the Mets from here on out - 86 not withstanding. Any attention they take away from the yankees is a beautiful thing. Wouldn't mind seeing the Padres win it either. We know what it's like to lose a football team and we took their basketball team too, so...
2015 was even louder... but the loudest its ever been in that stadium was 2004 and 2005. The bee noises they were making, causing it to be a football stadium-like atmosphere, literally caused the Cardinals to file a formal complaint with MLB claiming they were closing the roof for more of a HFA, etc. And if you look at how hungry the fan base has been, it makes sense that theres going to be a little more angst/aggression/fever-pitch noise for a team that hasn't yet got there after years of disappointment (as it was in 04, 05, and 15) vs. the last few years where this team has had the best run ever. That being said, the 1996-97 Rockets playoffs games (first Barkley years) had better crowds than the 94 run because that team was 'chasing it' and the fan base wanted to get back to the glory years in a severe (desperate) way (plus the 94 rockets still didn't capture the city until they made the comeback against Phoenix... and clutch city was born). So if the Astros go another 1-2 years without a deep playoff run (or miss the playoffs altogether), then put themselves in a position to be right back there... I'd expect it to mimic more what we saw pre-WS championships than what we saw post WS. TL; DR version: The Mets/Padres fans that haven't seen a WS in their stadium in 22/24 years respectively, are going to be fairly vocal. Phillies fans are just a different breed altogether (albeit, was plenty quiet in there in games 4 and 5 of 2022... I was there for one of those).
Does that apply when the ball is out of play? A HR is out of play... granted a runner can be called out if he forgets to touch a base before he touches home, but not sure he would be "automatically out"
But the rule specifically highlights for balls in play. This came up recently for what base runners should be doing on foul balls, which would be similar to HR balls in that regard (out of play). EDIT: sorry, didn't see the next tweet/gray box. At that point, seems like its an umpire's discretion. Also Betts didn't completely abandon the effort to touch the next base. As soon as he got word it was a HR, he went back to touch them. Would have probably been different if he went all the way back to the dugout and refused to go back out... then the umpire has to call him out. The example they used (walk-off HR) makes sense as that player willingly knows they hit a HR and they chose to celebrate or go home instead of rounding the bases. IN this case, Betts thought he was out, ball out of play, gets informed its a HR, continues to round the bases.
Completely agree. Forgot how loud the buzz was when the Bees were playing back then at MMP. I was there for the Burke game and the improbable Bruntlett/Everett/Berkman double play. Deafening. I remember the commentators commenting on how loud MMP was compared to other ballparks because of the roof too. Fans got complacent with playoff success…just like Braves fans did. Human nature. The loudest event I’ve ever attended was the first Texans game ever on a Sunday night vs the Cowboys. It was insane how loud it was. I’ve never seen a crowd will a team to a win more than that night. It was absolutely crazy.
There's no way as an ump I'm calling him out on a HR in the playoffs. That's grounds for being thrown off a cliff. Even in San Diego. As for Machado's legal path. In one way that's really not good for the aesthetic of the game, they ought to fix it, but on the other hand, it made the game a lot more dramatic too. It's one time where looking back to see the ball in play really helped the runner. I don't advise it, but his baseball IQ kicked in. Both play remind me of that play were the team sent the runner on first straight to the outfield intentionally forcing the other team to make a decision. It was a standoff. Yet it does work.
I was there for those games at Minute Maid against the cardinals and braves. It really was loud as **** and that bee noise got into the cardinals heads lol.
