100% this. It's not like Jalen Green where he HAD to have the ball in his hands from the moment he got here because Tate was our 3rd best player at the time (yes, that is a Christian Wood diss track).
I’m one of Reed’s biggest fans here, predraft I thought he has the potential to be one of our best players right up there with Sengun, but even then I’ve never suggested we get rid of Fred. I think the best course is to extend Fred on a lower per year salary and have him transition to a backup role in his mid 30s. In the meantime Reed will be the primary backup pg this season and eat into some minutes at sg as he earns more going forward.
A few thoughts after 1st PS game... - Still impressed by his feel for the game, he oozes smart play/doing the right thing. - His 3pt shots feel a little rushed, he'll settle down soon. - Love how he pushes the ball up court via pass, this skills will ignite our fast breaks. - Tenacious on defense, his hands are elite. He'll get beat some, but it won't be for lack of trying (which I can live with). - Liked how Ime used him in a variety of lie-ups. He may see 15-20 mins to start the season. - Not worried about him not shooting more. He's a rookie PG, who wants to earn his shots and prefers to get his teammates involved first. He was also open more than a handful of times and didn't see the ball. That will change as the season progresses.
The kid is a baller. If you can’t see it you can’t see the game, period. His time will come. Was the same for Alperen. The feel, skill, instincts and IQ are too high to fail.
https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/rockets/article/rockets-reed-sheppard-steph-curry-comparison-19826009.php “He is not Steph Curry, but I think he is the closest thing to Steph Curry that we’ve seen in a long time,” Haberstroh said on The Kevin O’Connor Show. “I think Reed Sheppard is going to be a good ballplayer for a decade plus in his career. You say he’s not Stephen Currry. He’ll never be Steph. There’s never going to be a Steph, but Reed Sheppard could, if he reaches his peak level, could become a Top 10, Top 15, Top 20 guy in the NBA,” O’Connor said. “I don’t think you can necessarily rule that out with the importance of shooting ability in the NBA today.” “I do think he’s the best player in this rookie class. I do think he has the best long-term future in the class,” said Haberstroh, who debuted a podcast of his own Wednesday. “We talk about, 'Oh, a guy at that size. How could,'… dude, the dude is way more athletic. I know this is kind of a trope at this point, but if you watch this guy play, he is not a stiff out there. He is not Steph Curry playing below the rim. He is a lot more dynamic, a lot more athletic.” Haberstroh also compared Sheppard to another guard who only spent one season at Kentucky: All-NBA player Devin Booker. “I think he is just a much better shooter than what you saw at Kentucky, even though he was great percentage-wise, I just think volume-wise he is way more than what I think he shot at Kentucky,” Haberstroh said. “And same thing for that guy, Devin Booker, who turned out to be a much better NBA player than he showed in college.”
I think Clingan will be better and I know that's not popular. We couldn't really draft him due to having Sengun. Reed has to be able to hit his threes and hit a lot of them. I still worry about his ability play against athletic guards who are good defenders.
You mean the dude who can't even make his layups? Rim running defensive bigs with no scoring skills shouldnt be lottery prospects.
