There was always the rumors of The Smurfs from around that area. This substack article from last year was interesting in that nobody knows how much or what were rumors about their existence. I remember people were scared in the 80s by their existence.

I almost brought that up! There were definitely rumors of the Smurfs. It’s been so long that I can’t remember if I ever had any first hand encounters.

VC was pretty big at the time too. I have a story with myself and a prominent VC member.

Existence of The Smurfs confirmed by 1980's pioneering hardcore gangster rap group the Beastie Boys:

In the song, Posse in Effect, the Beastie Boys clearly cite Houston rap influences, The Smurfs, Popeyes and Jerry Lewis:

I do the Smurf, the Popeye, and the Jerry Lewis:

And in the song, The New Style, the Beastie Boys clearly mention how they 'party' (gang activities) with The Smurfs:

I got to the party, you know what I did, The Smurf:

Entertaining article, there's also an appropriately Super 80s track in it.

At the Welch Middle School, meanwhile, Principal Bill Morgan decided to fight fantasy with fantasy. Morgan announced over the school’s public-address system that Garfield the cat and the Greatest American Hero were on their way to protect the students.
