Based on this, Harris's campaign had the much better night. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cbs-news-vp-debate-poll-2024/ CBS News Poll – October 1, 2024 Vice-Presidential Debate Watchers / POST-DEBATE Sample 1,630 Likely Voters who watched the Debate Conducted October 1, 2024 Margin of Error ±2.7 points
Likeability and relatability matters quite a bit. The general public en masse will give those people with those qualities the benefit of the doubt. We saw it in the past - the Democrats used to struggle with it at the federal level. They would not understand why someone like Kerry or Mondale or Gore would compete well when it came to policy or communication and still lose debates in the eyes of the public to less polished and less versed candidates like Reagan and Bush Sr. Those Democrats were more wonkish and less in line with normal people. Now the new age conservatives like Vance - they are the ones wonkish, cultist and cliquish and out of touch with normal people. It is why Walz can be effective calling them "weird" and why Vance cannot have a basic conversation with people or says weird things like "Democrats will say me liking Diet Mountain Dew is racist" and not realize how incredibly awkward that statement is all the way around. It is also why other similar people in the sphere like Musk, like other Venture Capitalists etc. are so convinced that their candidate "crushed it" and why they obsess on things like "IQ" and make circle jerk fantasy memes, because Vance IS part of that group, and his appeal IS largely to that group. However, they fail to realize that to many "normal" people, the message and delivery doesn't resonate as "real" or genuine. As a result - you can have Walz, who has long pauses, who can commit debate "Cardinal sins" - still be viewed positively, and in some cases "better" than Vance, who is more polished and arguably has a better grasp of the subject matter (although Walz knows the subject matter as well). It is also why the twitter nerd hive virus of "LOL two IQ derivatives" and "JD OWNZ HIM" isn't going to be effective. It is congratulatory circle jerk masturbation for the wonks.
You know what else is harmful to democracy in this country? Having two assassination attempts on the opposition's candidate.
it's funny to hear this and how he's a great speaker but when Harris did this last time, it was "the questions were rehearsed! Look into her ears; are those really earrings?!"
The dumb twitter echo chamber with their algorithm has screwed up so many minds now; you see one post about the example you gave and it's all over your TL and it has you thinking it's the majority and it's really not. Elon has ruined twitter not to mention no apology from him from openly calling for the assassination of Kamala
Both would-be-assassins were right wingers. Liberals had nothing to do with the assassination attempts.
From what I'm reading, it seems the most notable moment of the night was Walz pointing out that the only reason Vance is the VP candidate is because the previous guy refused to go along with Trump's election denialism. Walz then asked the rhetorical question of who will be the firewall for Trump's worst impulses, implying (not as explicitly as I wish he had) that Vance won't be that guy. Up to that point, the debate was probably dead even or maybe a little in favor of Vance. But that was a knockout blow and it came at the very end of the debate so it's what most people will remember.
Trump only has himself to blame that his violent rhetoric came back to bite him in the ass. He should be thanking God everyday that he's still drawing breath. Maybe after he's KFC'ed his way to a peaceful death then the GOP can come back to sanity...the MAGA sheep will be lost for a while though.
It's just about the most important argument against a Trump presidency. The guy is mentally unstable and he empowers unprincipled sycophants and crazies on the Republican side. Just look at the cast of unserious and dangerous characters on the rise politically for the GOP. I'm not particularly impressed by Kamala Harris, but I will take bland mediocrity over Trump every time.
He explained that most of the Haitians in question weren't going through the Green Card process and were granted status through the CBP app. They agreed with his description.
Halfway into the debate at 2x, my impression hasn't changed for either candidate. They're well coached, exagerating half truths, and regurgitating highlights from their campaign speeches. WSJ fact check https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/walz-vance-debate-fact-check-analysis-4a2cbcfa
