Jeff Bagwell does what Crane and the front office wants - he is a figurehead that speaks for the team and does what they ask him to do. He is a single voice in the room - his voice isn't even as persuasive as someone like Enos Cabell, who has more input. Bagwell was asked to be a cheerleader and to work with Abreu - which he did, and predictably it didn't work.... those are decisions made by ownership and the General Manager. Rather than pointing at Jeff Bagwell - ask why the Astros did not address their need for another bat or starting pitcher during the off season. They managed to salvage a deal for Kikuchi, but they NEVER added the bat that they knew they needed, because they assumed they could do it cheaper at the deadline.
